dude all i said was that I and only ME interpret and put it into a formula. and for instance they used to have a set chord progression and use it throughout the song like in roxanne....all the bridges and chorus and verse have all the same chords....it's the melody that changes.
as far as telling you how many songs i have written or how many publishing and record deal i have signed...... that's my personal business...... i told you have too much too prove......
I really couldn't care less about your record deals...I'm the least commercially oriented person I know. I would just like to hear your music. When it comes down to it isn't that what it's all about?
Fine, if you are too frightened to share your music but would rather instead tell people how you make songs without ever letting us hear the results of your formulaic songwriting so be it.

you know jake........ at first i thought that you were doing it on purpose .....then i looked at your profile and i saw what your occupation is....and then all of a sudden it all made sense.
Doing what on purpose? Disagreeing?

Uh...yeah?

I'm glad my occupation gives you some comfort, it's really more of a hobby. :D

yeah... I think I'll bring that one back...

I'm already kinda bored with duck dodgers...

:p

WATYF

watyf......... you are right!
i never meant to post this for argument's sake. i just wanted to share ideas, instead others have chosen to make it a battle on the wording(semantics).and i am guilty for falling into it too!

an hobby huh? that makes it worse.

it's not the fact that you disagree...but that you do it with a chip on your shoulders and bitterness...... i didn't post this to agree or disagree about semantics. if you don't believe in formulas or you don't like formulas or to you they don't even exist...then why even waste your time writing about something you are not into?

every time i tried to move on with it...you have been trying to bring it back into an argument or confrontation that i am not intrested in. i have nothing to prove to anyone especially on this forum at this superficial level.

Are you talking to me here? Why does my intrest as a hobiest make anything worse? Are you a pro? I'm sorry I still don't get ya. I don't FEEL any bitterness. I am very into songwriting and I love to argue as well...my bad. I thought your continued response signified your reciprocal interest.

You pointed to a couple similarities in songs by the Police and I hardly think that qualifies as a formula. I still would be interested in hearing your music if for nothing but to communicate at that deeper level. If you are afraid or feel cornered by my insistance sorry I guess I could stop.

I still think that you are a bit off when you find a formula in the end product of music writing. That's the reason I wanted to hear your music friend, to hear how this approach works for you.

Can't we argue and still get along?

cant we just agree that what works for one might not work for the other and theres nothing wrong with either way?....

I never said anything contrary.
I agree wholeheartedly gidge....wanna hump?;)

a) that wasnt directed directly at you Jake..that was to all of us arguing back and forth......

b) only if you buy me dinner......

forget it jake....
yes we surely can disagree and get along by all means.

What the hell is all this bickering?
Does Dragon have to come over here and slap the crap out of you guys?
Who really gives a shit about your opinions pro or con?
I do think brando posted this so some of the guys who use formulas can talk about them and share them, exchange ideas and create new thoughts on the subject. Discussing and exchanging ideas doesn't constitute arguing about cheating, copyright infringement, being uncreative or fifteen posts that you don't like them. Screw you. Start your own thread and call it, Anti-Formula Thread.

Cuz some pin heads doesn't have enough cells in their pea brains this thread has turned into a fourth grade brawl.

Sometimes I want to smell some of these piss & moaner's hair.
You know, just to find out where the fuck they've had their heads.

Good job of ruining a good idea, boys.

i feel your pain badgas......

it is human nature. but i think that we're good now and that we can start anew....huh? clean slate......

you know i like to start writing from the hook and then build everything around that. in my songs the hook is the bread and butter. i like strong melodious refrains.
i like to break down the chords of the hook and then spread them apart and add to them so to form other progressions for verses and bridges.....and or intros and outros.

No clean slate...EVER!

You sir are my nemesis!

Hook is the other word that pisses me off!

Relax guys, I'm just kidding. :D

I don't know why we'd need a clean slate but sure, if that helps.

What I was saying earlier about limiting yourself to spur creativity.

That is the most productive trick for me to use while writing....well that and a few puffs.

Ok, here's an example. I will sometimes use a single delay (ping pong or mono) and monitor every instrument in a tracking session with that. I will record a bass line while using that delay to sort of set the tempo and feel, I won't record the delay output but just use it to get a feel going. Then I will record a guitar part or parts with the same technique. By the time I have to get the drums going the rythym is really set and clear so it really gives the drums someplace to go.
I will then record a lead or synth part while printing the delay output. That gives me a sort of flexibility with tempo that a click can't give...it keeps up with you instead of the other way around.

Then I will break out an old poetry book and start riffing some vocals over it.

That's just one way.
