Song writing for 2:need some advice on a possible duet.

I want to write a song but this time I would like to try writing a song with the help of a female friend.As her and I have a history I thought it would be a nice idea for her and I write a song together.She could contribute her memories and feelings and I could combine them with mine to make a beautiful ballad.She hasnt had any experience at all with writing music/lyrics,etc so I'll be doing the whole lot,she will be able to contribute somehow.I havent written a song with anyone so this will be a completely new experience for me.I'm going to write the music and add my own lyrics.My friend will have to contribute something that I can turn into lyrics for her part of the song.

The main idea is to write a beautiful,deep and meaningful song so we can sing it together from the heart,sing it out loud and sing it to each other.Thats 1 idea.Another idea would be to write the lyrics that both of us contribute to and I put the whole lot together.I just dont know where to start.

The music has to be powerful to carry the song.I have to write the idea music for it.I then have to figure out how her and I can combine our thoughts and in what order.I thought about a duet.This is just an example of what we could do:

1)Intro.
2)chorus.sing together.
3)verse 1.she sings her verse.
4)verse 2.I sing my verse.
5)chorus.sing together.
6)sing 2 verses together.
7)sing chorus together.
8)instrumental
9)final chorus
10)chorus together fade to end the song.

Thats just a thought.I really dont know what the right way to do it is so I'm looking for suggestions please.

Could you not just sit in a room together and write the song? You could bounce ideas off each other.

Where to start? With an idea that's going to make your tune different from the millions of sacchariny treacly gooey lurv duets that have been recorded already. God knows we absolutely do not need any more of those.

Unless you're only writing it for the two of you, in which case it doesn't matter, and you can ignore me....
 
I like the Pogues song.Gives me hope that I can write something.
 
Its a start.She doesnt know anything about writing songs.I've written 5 songs for her so this will be our first song for each other.
 
The important thing about Fairy Tale of New York is that the duet is a beilevable dialogue full of spite, love and humour.
It's the high point of duets - everything else seems so stylized and rigid in comparison.
It helps that the melodies are great and the voices have character rather than Idol style.

I'm hoping to write a beautiful duet.Just dont know how.I'll get there.
 
Not that I know anything about writing a song, but to make it the mean something to you both and if she doesn't know anything about music. I would first think about the music notational structure. Get something going just to start the flow. Once you have an idea of the music, then you and your special female partner, can start bouncing ideas around. I think after a few hours, the song will take on its life. After that, it is just a matter of putting it together.

I think this way, you really have fun, create some memories and the quality of the song takes on less importance. It will be "your alls baby" so to speak.

Thank you for the ideas.I think its going to be a fun experience for her and I.There are so many pieces to the puzzle.
