I'll start by saying that the guitar is TOOOO LOUDDD! It is seriously drowning everything else out.

It sounds like there is a very good track underneath that guitar trying to get out. :thumbs up:

K I remixed and remastered this morning. I think it is better now. Thanks for listening!

I think the song is cool. I liked the vocal parts.

The mix overall has a hyped high end. It's missing a lot of low end. Overall tone isn't pleasing.

The lead guitar that comes in at 1:00 is probably 5-6 dbs too loud. I liked the part though.

The drums are all snare and cymbals. I'm not hearing much of a kick. Snare has some click to it that's a little too much.

I think the mix needs a bit of work. But I really like the song.

Thanks for listening. I don't know if I'm going to change it again as I've mixed/mastered from scratch 5 times now. also here's what someone on another forum said:

"Overall... it's a bit bass heavy."

shrug

K now i just added 8 db at 80 hz and below on the bass drum/floor tom mic, and I did a 'high cut' at 8.8khz on the master. I think this sounds better so thanks a lot. I think I uploaded my song in haste since I did about a zillion takes of the drums/guitar/vocals and I only spent a couple days mixing and mastering. Definitely a lesson learned. Also to listen on more sources is helpful. A friend said to listen in a car because cars don't reflect sounds, therefore it's more flat and honest. It sucks though because I haven't put my stereo in my car yet but i guess i will by the time my next one is ready. I'm tempted to do 4 songs at once.

Hmm, you seem to be all over the map listening to other people's advice and making huge swings in one direction or the other.

Two things to do: 1) walk away from the song for a week. Don't listen to it and don't think about it. Listen to other stuff. 2) Listen to other stuff. Listen to a lot of music in the same genre as your tune. Listen to it on the same speakers you are mixing on. Get some perspective on how it sounds. Don't listen to enjoy, but to study. Listen to each particular freq range, different parts of the songs, etc.

Then, after the one week haietus, apply what you've been hearing to your song.

The car suggestion is good, but only because it is a very familiar listening environment. If you don't have a stereo in your car and/or don't know it well, then it isn't going to be a good critiquing platform. So, probably not something you want to do at this point.

To me, you song has too much kick in it. That's probably the 8db @ 80hz thing. It makes me wonder what room you're mixing in. Gotta have a good acoustically treated room to get nice mixes.

Good advice. For now I'm happy with what I have. I ended up remixing it AGAIN (seriously time has flown the last three days and i have been late for everything and i've procrastinated so many actual responsibilities) but found I was happy with what I already had. Unfortunately (or not) I saved over the mix I liked so now all I have of that is the mp3. fudge.

Power Pop doesn't, as a genre, use pummeling guitar. You need to work on the guitar level & the bottom end of everything.
the song sounds like power pop potential - esp the solo but the mix mangles it. Listen to Plimsouls, Early Cheap trick, Big Star for mix ideas.

Oh yeah, and to respond to chili, I did the majority of the mixing in my unfinished basement on my best stereo ($200 thing). The basement is one big huge room and there's no carpeting or furniture or anything. I'd occasionally alternate to laptop speakers, earbuds and noise cancelling headphones. The buds and compy speakers are good for keeping trebley noises in check (5khz+), and the stereo and phones for bass.

Overall I am pleased with the mix and my last attempt wasn't as good as the current uploaded version IMO. Compared to most of my other songs I think I did a decent job. If I can listen to my track on laptop speakers without cringing I consider it a success.

Thanks again for the comments and I'll check out some of your songs ASAP. I need to leave for work now though.

LATER

Ahhh, an unfinished basement is like an unpainted canvas. I'm so jealous. I'm stuck in a little 10x10 office I built in the garage. :(

Be sure to read through the Studio Build forum here at HR. Lots of good info on how to transform that space into a real studio when you're ready. (It doesn't have to be expensive if you're a DIYer) Your mixes will thank you!!! :)
