macle...just wanted to clear up my last review of your track. Brought some gear home and had a good listen to your song, and I hear the vocals much much better now, they sound right on the mark to me. And wanted to add that this is a very hauntingly nice piece of work, it''ll stay on my H/D for sure.

WOW. THis is great. Is everything doubled or something? The piano and accoustic guitar and maybe the cello sounds sound doubled or put on two tracks each or something. It sounds really strong. Yeah, I'm definatey hearing two accoustic guitars. What doing the cello sounds? This is a nice piece and the vocals and harmonies are really good as well. I"ve listened to this song about five times already. The mix is really good and I love that 'Godfather" thing at 0:56, and I think once more later.

Great work

Really good sounding! What synth are you using (or maybe sampler?) And those backing vocals are just perfect (doubled or krhm... tuned?).

Really jefflynneish sound.

I am extremely impressed. Awesome performance, right on the money. The mix sounds REALLY "pro". Very good work!

i LIKE IT i LIKE IT i LIKE IT. It doesn't quite live up to the Joke or Fingerprints level, but it's really nice, and an incredible recording. :D

David. Thanks very much. That is very cool! I still might adjust things a "hair" or two!;)

Thanks Ray! Yes, I am a doubling maniac. The acoustics are doubled and the cellos and stuff have various layers. The piano is the Gigasampler piano. The cellos are various samples from Gigasampler including a couple of free soundfonts I downloaded off the web, and a mellotron sample. That's funny about the Godfather thing. At first I didn't know what you were talking about, but then I realized the lick you're talking about is kinda like the Godfather theme. Cool! Thanks again.

Hi tubaz. Thanks very much. I'm guessing you listened to "Joke" on account of the Jeff Lynne comparison. A couple people before said Joke sounded like Jeff Lynne/ELO.

The backing vocals are definitely doubled. Come to think of it they might be tripled or quadrupled! I use Gigasampler for pretty much all keyboard type stuff. Thanks again!

Thank you very much Jake. I really appreciate it!!

Hey rats. Thanks man!! That's real cool on account of, well, uh, I sung those ones:o. Seriously though, thanks a lot, we both appreciate it.

Hey Macle are these songs only downloadable as mp3's i.e. no streaming. For some reason when I try to download a song windows media player pops up and says end of file reached before any music is heard. It wont give me the normal download file pop up screen and allow me to save the file to my hard drive. Oh well, would love to hear you new stuff. I will try to download the song at work.

Try right clicking on the link and choosing "Save Target As"

I don't know why it doesn't work. Did it work doing what Jake said?

I was going to put up a streaming version, but it ruined the sound so much, it seemed useless to try to get feedback on the recording. If you can't get it at work, maybe I could try emailing it to you.

Thanks macle!

I tried at work and still couldn't down load the file. I think that windows media player is somehow interfearing with the download since it tries to open it from the site somehow confusing the file with streaming media.

Please send the email to

Could you also email me a mp3 of joke?

thnx

The vocals are amazing (quality, tracking, dynamics, everything) How the hell did you get those strings to sound so good? Especially the cello starting around 00:39 and at the finally of the song. Please give us a list of the equipment/software that you used as well as the instruments you played to create this excellent piece of art.

Wait, wait, wait how the fuck (excuse my French) did you get those cello sounds out of gigasampler. They sound so convincing like the bow is going back and forth on each note.

One more request...could you email me just a small piece of the part of you brain that stores your musical/mixing ability. If you think it may be too messy to download you could send it in a zip-lock bag via air mail.

Wow, thanks!!

The equipment: Paris DAW (love hate), Brent Averill API preamp, RNC compressor (don't really like, got a Distressor, really like, but not used on this song), Fender Jazz Bass (Japan), Martin DM acoustic, Yamaha Stage Custom drums (borrowed a DW snare though, just got a Slingerland snare which I think is pretty cool, the Yamaha snare is horrible), Rode Classic II (lead vocal, rented), TLM103, D112, Alesis QS8 (don't really like), KRK V8 monitors.

Software: Gigasampler, Cubase for sequencing, various plugins including the Waves Ren Comp (used on vocals), various samples for Gigasampler (the one you're probably talking about is the Dan Dean solo string cello, real nice, but I also used some samples I found on the web that have a very quirky cool sound). The piano is GigaPiano.

I really have to jump through hoops to do the keyboard stuff since I only have one computer (a PIII450), and I can't run Gigasampler and Cubase and Paris at the same time, it's really a pain, and Paris has only 16 tracks, which is 8 stereo tracks, and I have to do a lot of submixing, so I'm really glad you think it turned out good!

Thanks a lot for being so persistant in wanting to hear it, that's really cool, and I'm glad you liked it.
