OK. Here's the skinny. I've got a fatar sl880 going (via midi) into a tascam us-428. the us-428 is going (via usb) into a 1.2ghz AMD Athlon. the Athlon is running Sonar2.

When I am recording audio, the latency is fine. When I am recording midi the latency is absolutely fine. When I am recording Dxi (the edirol vs whatever) the latency is very noticeable... almost unplayable.

since the midi and audio work fine independent of one another, can i assume that i'm stuck or is there a magic number i should be shooting for. the latency slider is full to the left.

US-428

The latency on my US-428 was exactly the same. Terribly slow. My softsynths were totally unplayable. I sold my US-428 and decided to get an ECHO soundcard.

I have been totally happy with it. All my softsynths play almost with zero latency.

i assumed it was my PC and/or sonar settings since the midi works just fine when i'm playing on my keyboard and hearing the sounds come out of the drum machine.

i figure that the us-428 is just sending midi whether its being redirected by sonar to the drum machine or to a soft synth.

hopefully, i'll get some time to play around with it this week.

finally got it working properly.

i reduced the i/o buffer size on tascam's graphical user interface to 256k.

i reduced the i/o buffer size in sonar to match.

i reduced the buffers in playback queue to 2.

Cross, there's a huge difference between audio latency and MIDI latency. That's what you've just discovered... ;)
