I feel like pulling my hair out! I just reformatted, and tried to install Sonar 2.0xl. I ran the utility, but the install freezes! I can't even Ctrl-Alt-Del out of it. It's really pissing me off because I hate to manually shut off my pc (did it twice). Anyone have a solution?
Thanks.

What version of DirectX do have now, after your reformat and reinsatll of windows. If it higher than 8 you will need to get the patch from the Cakewalk site and run that first.

It freezes installing the utility, or installing Sonar? What's your OS, computer specs, any other issues you've had?

It freezed installing Sonar via the utility.

P4 2.4B Proc.
1gig ram
XP Pro

What happens when you install sonar without the utility?
It could be a bad CD, I had that problem with an earlier version of Cakewalk. Every time I put the CD in the computer would lock up. I got around it by putting the CD in before windows was booted and running the install from the command line. But that's a different story.
Is the CDrom noisy or making clicking noises?

I'm sorry for the questions, I'm trying to gather information to possibly help you.

Well, after the utility changes my registry, I could install directly from the cd. Yes, the cdrom is noisy, but it's always noisy. I know the computer's frozen when the cdrom doesn't make any noise.

I tried installing on two different drives, and it freezes in different spots. It freezes when the Roland stuff is being installed in my Plextor CDRW drive, and freezes at the end at "reconfiguring your settings...please wait". From there, I have to go to the start menu and shut down...that's the only way out.

However, I was able to go into the Programs folder in my C drive and open Sonar from there, but it doesn't show up in my Programs menu in Windows. I guess I could work around the problem doing that...but the fact is that it should work properly.

I'm thinking that it's a bad CD as well. Unfortunately, I didn't make any backups of it...I treated it really well and there are no scratches on the CD. If this is so, any clue if Cakewalk will replace it?

Thanks.

If you can show them that you're a registered customer, I can't see why they wouldn't replace a defective CD.
If Sonar's working, chances are it just didn't get to the stage of putting shortcuts on the start menu. Of course, there's no telling what else it didn't get around to installing, so even if you manually put the shortcuts on the menu it's not a good situation.

What has cakewalk support said about it? They're usually moderately helpful to me when I've got questions.

By the way, I'm assuming you had winxp and sonar installed on this pc before, or is this the first time?

Is XP updated to the latest SP?

Yeah, I've had Sonar for almost 2 years and have put it on this computer before. I updated everything--all Service Packs and critical updates--before I installed any programs.

I didn't get a response from Cakewalk yet via e-mail. I'll try again later.

Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it.

I just had the same problem. Man was I pissed! I found the DirectX 9 patch on the site, but still couldn't get it to work with the Sonar XL2 install, so I un-installed Sonar, and ran the patch without any Cakewalk products on the computer. When it prompted me to insert the Cakewalk disk, I stuck in my Pro Audio 9 disk. Although the next prompt said that I didn't need the patch for PA9, it still ran the patch (evidently) because when I continued to install Sonar, it finally worked.

So the install initially froze on you too? Or did it just not work?

thuthfully, my whole computer was fucked at the time, so I'm not sure if it was shitting the bed prior to my attempt to install Sonar... one of those days, ya know...

It finally worked. After a long interchange of basic responses from Cakewalk (did you download the utility? did you update? did you go into regedit? etc, etc,). I was finally told to try to see if Sonar would install in another computer. If it didn't, they would send me a new one. If it installed, I was told to erase everything from my Temp folder and double check to make sure nothing's running in the background in Windows.
Well, it installed in my laptop so I knew that the cd was fine. I did all the things Cakewalk said to do on my desktop, and it finally worked. I just wanted to let you guys know what worked. Thanks all for your help.
