SONAR vs. POD vs. Stereo or Not?

Going to be tracking a rhythm section tomorrow. I found out that the Bass player wants to record direct via a Bass POD(I don't yet have a bass amp and he doesn't want to tote one in).

I'm using SONAR 3.1.1...the guys are going to play a couple fusion rock/jazz pieces. Then next week the vocals and guitar solo stuff will be done.

The question is, should I capture the Bass in stereo or mono? It seems kind of weird to me to even ask that question. The input to the POD unit is a single input...there are two outputs on the POD but how could that possibly be "stereo" unless there's some effects processing going on inside the POD? I'll have both POD outputs going to my Delta1010 inputs 3&4 then in SONAR, the option is to take both inputs as stereo or mono. I did a little further looking into the POD...I guess I can also take a single output (disregard the "right" channel).

I'm a little confused about some of the terms here. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I would record the bass dry, and in mono.

I would even grab a signal before it hits the pod, and DI that in on a seperate channel using a regular DI box, that would give you 2 channels of bass in mono, so you can have a nice clean track, as well as the one that has been thru the amp sim in the pod, the more options at mix-time the better, IMO.

Oh...ok...I gotcha...

I'll just take the bass to my outboard mixer, split the signal...one out to the pc the other out to the pod or what ever additional effect the Bassman want then back to the pc for a second track. I could get the POD out in a single and/or a stereo track while I'm at it. Pick and choose later for which sounds best.

Great idea...thanks

I am not too familiar with the bass POD, have used the POD Pro for guitar. In the outputs it gives you the ability to take 2 signals out. One unprocessed and the other processed through whatever amp sim you use. This is a good way to get both a DI and an amp simulated signal easily at the same time. You may want to check into that as it would make your life a little easier. Also, you will very seldom ever use 'stereo' bass tracks for a lot of reasons beyond this particular writing.

Best of luck!

It may not end up being a matter of which one sounds best, but rather how much of a blend of both sounds best...

:D
