Sonar mainly for MIDI?

I've always done simpler, low-fi recordings at home using the Cakewalk program I bought in....geez, 1998? Somewhere in there? Now that I've been playing with a band for two years and we're up to recording, I'm revamping my basement to get ready and setting up a studio. I was going to get Sonar, but an engineer for a local studio I've played at said that the program was usually for people who work with a lot of MIDI, and that there were better programs if you were going entirely MIDIless. Is this true?

i used sonar to write and record my last cd (link in profile). works great for both audio and midi, and is well featured for both.

i should add that sonar is compatible with all kinds of interfaces as well, so it's really flexible. it's also very intuitive and easy to use.

Sonar is quite a strong audio program, and probably has the best integration of midi and audio that's out there.

Don't discount the fact that you will likely find usage for midi as you get more involved with the program; however, even as a standalone audio app, it is a fine program.

Curious though as to what your "friend" thought were better audio apps? The two I would think are Nuendo and Pro Tools, both of which are significantly more money. Put the extra money towards better hardware (sound card, mics, preamps) and you'll be better served.

"A friend told me..." is some of the most dangerous info in the world....

:D True

I guess you friend was talking about Pro-tools which is famous for their Audio functions

But as dachay said, it cost more money and frankly, Sonar can do the job just fine
So yeah...Your friend was a little way off

Your friend has absolutely no idea what their talking about.

Download some demo's and that will help you get a feel for it.

Bottom line:

Midi scares some people so they make ridiculous claims. SONAR works fine, whether you are a midi person or not.

IMO opinion, Sonar is the most flexible recording software you can buy these days...It has a lot of features that others don't, and it costs considerably less than others...in addition I haven't found a professional program yet with the editing capabilities, user friendly GUI, and small learning curve that Sonar has....that in mind, please buy it so us poor shmucks can get SP6 cheaper when it finally comes out... :D

Sonar is great for Audio. I actually think it kind of sucks for midi tho I know how to use it I just see other programs that work with midi better however the audio aspects of Sonar remind me a lot of Pro Tools LE/Mpowered

I have sound Sonar very easy to use, and the only midi I use is DFHS. I also have Pro Tools M-Powered, and Adobe Audition, but like the way Sonar operates, so use it pretty much for everything.

I've used Sonar and Cubase, and out of the 2, I much prefer Sonar.
In fact, I can't stand Cubase.

Sonar is great for midi, and excellent for normal recordings too.
Very easy to use too, in comparison.

Cakewalk > Steinberg

I am a huge fan of Sonar and I use pretty much no midi at all. I've used Pro Tools and don't like it nearly as much as Sonar. I don't have enough good things to say about Sonar.

i 2nd that. its good for Audio n MIDI both. if u dun use MIDI at all, its not harmfull to have sum extra features even if u dun use it. u never know, u might need it someday.

Started from scratch this year with no idea and Sonar was easy to learn and great to work with. Never had a probelm with midi or audio. Never used the others but this is a Great program. Don't think I will ever have the need for the others.
