i just got Sonar 4 Producer Edition and i just dont know how to record with it, i got my mixer hooked up to my computer with the rca adapter and i can hear sound through my headphones from music on my computer and my mic i can also hear, does anyone know how the simplest form of recording over and instrumental is with this program?

what?

Perhaps you should have got a lesser version of Cakewalk (maybe guitar tracks) and spent some cash on your soundcard. RCA adapter running into your PC is most probably not going to cut the mustard.

Shiver me timbers, I do believe that it says in the manual, matey.

so get a new sound card? i was told thats all i needed was a mixer, mic, and software to use on my computer and i should be recording in no time. i have decent equipment too. A Peavey PM ONE Production Mixer and a Ominion DS-V7 Microphone, Sonar 4 Producer Edition and a Compaq computer that only has 37.2 GB on it, you think i need more ram and a soundcard? Any recomendations?

Well, you haven't said what soundcard you're using. While pretty much anything should work in the sense of "I can record sound", you may need an upgrade in order to get a soundcard that works in the sense of "that doesn't sound like a cassette that's been in the attic for 30 years".

It sounds like you may just not have Sonar configured to recognize the soundcard inputs. That's something you should be able to figure out via your manual.

Also, "only has 32.7 gig" doesn't mean much of anything. There's a diference between primary, volatile memory (ram) and secondary, non-volatile memory (hard drive space) - in fact, people who haven't gone to school for computer sciece typcially don't think of or refer to hard drives as memory at all. Just call it "hard drive space" or "storage." You may or may not need more ram, but that has nothing to do with whether you can record sound or not in Cakewalk.

lol mmmk? i got it, i think that was more insulting than helping, im from the hood man, i dont know what the f*ck u just said man, so my question is what should i do as a pointer from an outsider, what would you do? in this case homie.

buy a soundcard...sounds like you're using a stock windows soundcard and that isn't going to give you what you want. Check out some units by m-audio or presonus.

A. It wasnt insulting at all.

B. You could be from the hood, Maine, russia, phillipines or Rwanda, it doesnt matter. All of us are here for the same reason, to learn home recording.

My suggestion:

Take a while to read this forum and some books on recording. Sonar4 is extremely complicated stuff.

In general:
you cant use the soundcard that came with your computer
Dont worry about your 37gig hard drive, it is fine.
Be prepared to spend some serious time reading.
Lots of people here are very helpful. Feel free to ask questions, but dont insult and swear at somebody because you dont understand what they said.

It would be helpful if you described your compter specs and how much RAM you have.

Well, this is a very technical field, so you'd better get used to it and start learning what these things mean. As has been mentioned several times already, the answers you're looking for are in the Sonar manual. A great start for your work in recording would be to give the manual a good read to get you familiar with both recording concepts in general, and also how Sonar works. Sonar has a very good, easy to understand manual, so you shouldn't have any trouble.

Alright i had someone else install the Sonar 4 edition and i dont't have a manual, maybe ill just downgrade or get a new program. My soundcard is prolly it cuz i have a Intel(r) Intregrated Audio, and thats my only option besides master in the program. Im thinkin about just getting a Soundblaster card at best buy, or can you guys recomend a good soundcard but affordable? Price range from $30-$100. thanks for everything.

So....in other words......it's not a legal copy. We're not going to help you configure a pirated installation of a recording program. We're artists here, and we take people's intellectual rights very seriously, whether it be music or software....there is absolutely no difference between them. So get yourself a real, valid copy of some recording software, or use something free like Audacity, and then we'll help with that.

As to the sound card, it's hard to find anything that was really designed with recording in mind for less than about $150, and that would be the M-Audio MobilePre. It has 2 input channels and preamps, so you could record 2 mics to separate channels at the same time. Obviously, at that price it's not going to sound like it came out of a pro studio, but in this industry most of the time you get what you pay for. Lots of folks that have used the MobilePre like it, so it wouldn't be a bad place to start.

This is not true, you can get the M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 for around $100.00 (retails at $129.95) and it is a good quality card. he allready has a mixer so he does not need pre's.By the way the mobile pre retails for $179.95, well I guess you could get it for $150.00 but USB..... Yuk!!!!

Well, i'm not made of money, so I think I'll go steal a Ferarri from the local dealership...

So someone has to have a big name for themselves before they can be called artists? I really don't even care what you think of me personally, but just so you know, you are right on course to have everyone on this board write you off as an idiot. We love to help people, but not people who are being assholes. Just something to keep in mind...

It's past the fact that im an asshole, but whats Idiotic? If being an idiot is saying whats on my mind then shit im mentally retarded. Im sorry i didnt get the memo on the rules of being an Artist, i could go on and on all day about that but i just wanna get this system workin man, thats all. The audacity program i downloaded looks pretty simple, i have a question about the input, my choices are Phone Line,Microphone,Line In,CD Audio,Video,Aux,Mono mix, and Stereo Mix, what should it be on? Once again this is for the Audacity program that was free but im sure all the programs have these options.

Geez...looks like someone forgot their prozac this morning...

You want either Line In or Stereo Mix, depending on how your soundcard works. Try both and see what results you get.
