That seems to be the consensus. I just ordered mine this morning, so I'll let you know my take in a few days. :)

I don't really know what benefit this is, though.

What, the benefit of sounding better?
Yeah!

If it doesn't translate to a CD, who cares if it sounds better in Sonar. None of your friends and fans are going to be listening to it in Sonar, are they?

Now if sounding better in Sonar allowed you to make better mixes, than that's a different story. However, I don't quite see how it would do that. In fact, it might cause you to make worse mixes.

oh!

I got you. Yeah, funny you bring this up as I've had this talk with friends regarding 24 bit. If CD 's are 16 bit, why the hell do we care about recording in 24 bit? I also was commenting to a friend that with my alesis hd 24 I feel the sound is better in the end recorded in 44.1. instead of 48k....Converters? Jim

I would hope that if your mixes sound better in S3 then they would make for better CDs in the long run. Why? Because you will make better choices when using EQ, effects, compression, etc. The same theory applies when we use better monitors for mixing; it leads to more accuracy. And, I'm sure many people listen to their projects over and over before it ever gets to the CD stage. I bring in people to listen to my rough mixes before I ever do a final mix, so it does get heard. While you may cross reference your mixes on various monitors in order to translate well on many playback systems, you surely wouldn't want to cross reference your mixes on a mixing platform that was inferior to S3. So, enjoy the improvement in sound, and use it to your benefit.

Better does not equal more accurate. That is my point.

For years, the standard monitors in studios were the Yamaha NS10's. Not because they sounded better. In fact, they sound like crap (IMHO). However, if you could make a mix sound good on them, you had a pretty good chance that it would sound good on just about anything.

So, what I'm saying is that if Sonar 3 makes your mixes sound better, it could end up making your mixes worse in the long run. (Kinda the opposite effect of what the Yamaha's did.)

However, if in fact Sonar 3 is more accurate - then we are talking a different ballgame. Just not sure that I am buying the consensus opinion that it sounds better as meaning it is more accurate.

Now I will shut up, since I haven't even heard Sonar 3 yet. I'll be back in few days. :D :D

It sound more clear and open. Definately a better thing, no ifs, ands or buts. Better. Period.

Try it for Gods sake.

I know what you are saying

, I get you. You have a good point. I think we will all have to wait and see how it all "pans" out...lol. I just thought I was crazy or I was taken by the new look of the console and all. But to my ears,it does sound better. We shall have to see if it translates into the mixes! Jim

Why wouldn't a better sounding audio engine and mix bus make a better sounding mixdown file?

Don't all recording programs actually use these two things whenever performing an "in the box" mix?

I presume Dachay is referring to a similar difference to hi-fi speakers and studio monitors.

Hi-fi speakers colour the lows and highs to make the music sound better. Studio monitors are flat so that your mixes translate to all the different versions of hi-fi speakers and their relative EQ responses.

That is not what S3 is doing. It is, as Tubedude says, more open and cleaner sounding. This transparency does indeed translate to CD.

All summing engines are equal, but some are more equal than others.

Studio. Because. . .

- I already have Kompakt and didn't need VSampler.
- I already have the Waves plugins and don't need the Sonitus stuff.
- No one seems too excited about the Pantheon Reverb.
- I don't use Console View.
- Cakewalk had an upgrade special on SE for $79.

and. . .

- All I really, really wanted from Sonar 3 was the Bus Routing features, which you get with SE.

However, the confidence recording is a nice extra. I wouldn't have bought it for that, but since it comes along for the ride :) :)

dacha...mix exactly the same file down in sonar 1.31 and then sonar 3.0 with no changes....burn it to cd...the difference doesnt just jump out like "this one sounds really pro and this one sounds really amateurish", its the subtle nuances...i don't think this better sound is hyped..i think sonar fixed a problem....think of it as the difference between mixing on a mackie and mixing on an SSL with all other things being equal the SSL will destroy the mackie i don't think the difference between sonar 1 and and 3 is THAT big but the same principle...YMMV
