Steve, although I've still only got version 2.2, I have a Mackie Control, and had some initial wierdness with it as well. Mostly, it would lock up while recording some heavy automation... and nothing except a reboot could get it going again.
The workaround I found for this was to put the Mackie on a completely different MIDI interface than my main soundcard. Bingo, problem solved.

I don't know if this will help with your problem, but it's worth a shot.

Oz,

I have the Mackie going through a MidiSport 2X2. Since that's a USB interface, it has no impact on and is not affected by any soundcard in the DAW.

I do all my tracking and mixing on it. Allows me to stay in the digital domain and keeps my analog mixer fully dedicated to input levels... no split mixing.

The Mackie Control works great in 2.2.

I won't do without it... not even for Sonar 3.

Thought you guys would appreciate this correspondence I'm having with Cakewalk Technical Support. It's in the form of an email thread, so my reply to them is on top:

Brett,

Thank you so much for your reply.

Item 1. Trim on any mixer or input accepting device adjusts the sensitivity of the input channel to the incoming signal. I use it this way in Sonar 2.2.

For example: Many times I have a guitar signal with good saturation on the analog mixer creating a signal on the Guitar track in Sonar that should be a little stronger. Since the analog mixer already has good levels, I adjust the trim on the guitar track in Sonar 2 to increase the sensitivity of the input channel. This works. The result is definitely a stronger recording without the distortion that would have been created by increasing the trim or fader on the analog mixer.

I guess you are saying that now, in Sonar 3, the trim control adjusts the audio level of the playback to allow the fader to be adjusted to a more centered or unity gain position during playback? My testing indicates that this is now the case.

I guess this can save CPU resources on weak signals when turning up the trim eliminates the need to insert a plug-in on the track for the purpose of increasing the playback volume. I'm not sure about the manual, but this change is not documented in the on-line help text, or readme.RTF file, or the "What's New" documentation. At least now I know how it works.

Item 2. The OMF 1 issue I described is not related to opening OMF 1 files. A fatal error occurs and the application crashes when EXPORTING to an OMF 1 file.

Item 3. I'm very pleased to hear that a new "plug-in" for the Mackie Control Universal control surface is being developed for Sonar 3. I hope that my list of concerns will be helpful in that process. Your confirmation that my list has been turned over to development would be most satisfying to me.

Thank you again for your responses,

SteveD
