When I export a wave file in 24 bit, I can't play it back in Windows Media player. Any thoughts on why this is the case. When I export it as a 16 bit file, it plays just fine, thanks!

wmp is set to only play 16 bit files by default. i believe you can get it to work by going to tools, options, the devices tab, then clicking on the speaker icon and selecting properties. click the checkbox that says "use 24 bit for audio cd's". doesn't seem like it should work, but if i remeber correctly, it did. also, if the program is using 16 bit outputs (for system sounds), songs will not play properly

Performing that operation in Windows Media player still will not allow for 24-bit files to be played (at least on my system with a MOTU 896 interface). Through an application that supports 24-bit (and interface), of course you won't have the issue, but if you simply click on the file that is exported from say, Sonar, Windows Media player won't handle it properly.

I've looked all over for a solution, which appears to be a simple codec download, but haven't been able to find one. heroics321, do you actually have this working on your system?

Yeah i had the same problem, finding codecs and stuff was a pain ( i never did )

I did some research and came across this site:

http://24bit.turtleside.com/

I guess 16 bit is all that windows was intended for since there really is no need to deal with 24 bit files rather than recording/editing. They play fine in any decent audio editing/multi-track program.

As for the codec, thats one solution I couldnt find. If you find one post it here!

I don't have a problem, as long as Windows Media player supports the device that I recorded the wavefile on.

I just have to select that device via the Sounds and Audio Devices manager in the Control Panel as the default device.

Why don`t you just download WinAmp. It has no problems with most file types, including 24 bit, and loads way faster than Media Player.

What if I use a 24 bit Audigy card?
Dunno. I have a 24-bit Turtle Beach, but when I want to play back that resolution, I usually go with my firewire drivers (to my mixer).

I'll give it a shot with my Turtle Beach and let you know how that goes.

yes i do. it's quite tempermental and glitchy, and i cannot seem to understand why it works, but it does. i usually just use sound forge, media player isn't really my go-to program for playing back files.

Been to that link before....didn't really tell me much. At the top it states: "The following audio codecs are automatically downloaded by the latest versions of Microsoft Windows Media Encoder and Windows Media Player..." That tells me that downloading/installing Media Player 10 would've installed any appropriate codecs to my system. Am I missing something? I have the Encoder installed on my system as well.
