Hi all,
I want to set up my computer so i can record myself talking because im creating an information product and i want to include audio cds.

Can i purchase a "drive" that has ..oh say 1/4" inputs or RCA hookups and lets me record into my computer either on mp3 or .wav ? I want to do this as inexpensive as possible without sounding like something from the 1950s.

If you have a sound card that has a mic input, all you need is recording software. If you want to step up the quality a bit get a mic pre amp and something besides a computer mic (which suck big time) and go into the computer thru the line input. The software is what you really need. Something like N-Tracks is cheep. I use Soundforge myself.

You can download the N-Track demo for free here and it should be great for what you're wanting to do.

Also, you can get a Shure SM58 mic for $90 and an Art MP preamp for $99, (or if you've got more money on hand you could get a better preamp) at a local music store, then when you're done recording your voice.....just return it.

You can get a mini mixer that are about $100. You will need a mixer so you can hook up the sound card to mic. Forget a preamp, save your $80 and just wing-it. I take it you are not looking for sound quality, right. You can buy a Shure 57 for $80 and it's just as good as the 58. Although the 58 is geared toward vocals and the 57 is toward instruments, for what your using it for it will sound great. You can use the N-track stuff for freee or you can download ProTools FREE at this site...
