This thread probably should have died already, but I can't help but throw in two thoughts.
1) The other key point that's not being discussed is the difference in people's definition of "close enough". For me, my POD is close enough to most of the guitar sounds that I want, that I've not once thought of buying another guitar amp in the last 3 years. For others, the mere thought of using a POD is absolutely repulsive. I recorded an entire album using a Fender P-Bass through an original POD, and loved the results. Many might call that sacriledge...
2) Believe me, the song "When I was seventeen" is among my favorites. (I love the Homer Simpson parody "I had a very good beer", too!). But Frank Sinatra could have been singing through a tin can and a string, and it still would have sounded absolutely incredible. Key point number four (in Engelbert's summary) should be "musical talent matters 1000 times more than any piece of equipment. Once you've got that, the rest matters. If you don't, there's no piece of 'pro' equipment that's going to help you"
