This problem has been plaguing me for awhile. I have made a demo tape with a Tascam Porta02 ministudio. Simply put, this is what I want to do: I want to correctly connect the tascam to my computer (stock sound card with Miniplug input) recording them with the program Quartz audiomaster, so I can burn them to Cd.
I am connecting the porta 2 to the computers line input with a cord that came with the car kit to my sony discman. One side has patch (L and R) inputs, while the other has a stereo mini plug that fits right into my computer.

While I play back the tape the sound coming through the computer speakers is fine, but when I play back the finished recording it is Way too fast, and it is like clipped and garbled... it's not legible music as far as im concerned... total noise...

so I suppose what I'm asking is what can I do about this? and how can I do it the right way??? please respond quickly, I'd like to get this problem out of my hair.

Thanks in advance,

~Bobcat

Fear not! The portastudio records twice as fast as a normal cassette deck, and when you play it back it sounds right because the studio is still playing at twice the normal speed. The reason why is sounds good through your computer is because the computer is just playing all the music directly from the portastudio. What you need to do is mix down to a regular cassette deck and than hook up the cassette deck to the computer.

I think the problem is something different altogether. It sounds like you have problems recording with your sound card. To make sure, try to record something else. Connect a CD-player to the inputs, you should get the same problem...

What to DO about it, I have no idea about. Ask in the Computer Recording forum...

Yeah, I agree with regebro. Frank, the portastudio (I have a 424 MkIII) records at twice the speed, but it also plays back at twice the speed, thus there won't be any problems if you both record and playback at the same speed.

This particular situation has nothing to do with tape speed. The porta02 only records and plays at regular cassete speed: it doesn't have the double speed capability of the 414, 424, etc. It definately sounds like a software problem - I have seen recent posts in the soundcard and software threads talking about this sort of problem.

Raj: I beg to disagree. I have a Porta-2 that operates at 3-3/4"/sec (double speed). What it DOESN'T do is change to another speed: Tascam made these in 2 models.
Back to Mr Bob, and not being a computer maven, I'll bet it's a computer prob. I just removed a terrible sounding noise generator from my CD burner by ... substituting another, shorter, cable. It's like tuning up your car by tightening the seat belts! Anyway, if it IS a doublespeed Porta-2, the playback through a conventional cassette player will be slower -- and half as fast (no jokes, please). And an octave lower. In fact, this is the idiot's screening test when you have a bunch of unlabeled cassettes laying around: play 'em on your conventional player, and if it sounds normal it doesn't go with the twice-speed deck. Loooooww pitched vocals go on the other one. Not that I ever failed to meticulously label my cassettes, you understand --this is something I heard about somewhere.

Well, that's a fine how-do-you-do! The only Port-02's I've ever seen were the regular speed ones like my brother has. He got it used and I downloaded a manual from Tascam's website, which made it a point to mention that two track tapes from the Porta-02 could be played on a regular cassette player. But if you've got a double speed one, then they must exist. So I guess if you tried to play a tape recorded at double speed on a regular tape recorder into your computer, it would sound rrreeeaaalll ssslllooowww. But if you went straight from the Porta 02 to the computer, the speed of the tape would be irrelevant, so it must be a hardware or software glitch. Live and learn!

Raj: too right you are. As a matter of fact I recorded out of my Porta-2 into Cool Edit Pro last night and dubbed onto CD for a friend's project. It worked fine.

What are the two Models?

I have a Porta 2 (4-tracks at once, 4 Mic inputs, 2 line inputs) My unit records at normal tape speed.
Is your's a mK. II?
I bought mine when it came on the market, after we wore out my singer's Porta One.
