No, I wasn't accusing you of stealing, sorry.

If someone sounds exactly the same as what I've heard before, I always have to say it. People always sound somewhat the same as there influences, that's in-escapable and some more than others, but every part of this except the lyrics made me feel like I've heard it before. It's not just the progression, it's the tones - underlying rhythm - solo - drums, all, whether origanally arranged separate or together sounded - like I said "been done"

I have a friend who is a great sounding musician, but everything he writes has that "been done" sound, He get's mad when I tell him that and insists it's original, but it's not.

I'm sure a lot of what I do sounds alot like my influences to, I try not to let that happen to blatently though. like I said... It's in-escapable.
Okay fair enough. I'm really not trying to write some great grammy winning song or anything. Less is more, as far as I'm concerned. I'm more into the fun factor. If it sounds like it's "been done", I don't know what to tell you. There's only 12 notes I can use. I am heavily influenced by stuff like the Ramones, KISS, Dead Kennedys, The Ventures, Misfits, The Cramps, etc, and stuff like that. Pretty basic stuff. Thanks for taking the time to listen and give feedback. :)

That cover of "STRUTTER" you did sounded great Greggles! :p
I wrote that! :D

What are we rumbling for? Did someone invade my turf? :D

Thanks man. I have no mix secrets. I just turn knobs, push buttons, and move faders until I like what I hear. Ears don't lie. If it doesn't sound right, then it isn't. I do spend a lot of time on mic positioning and getting the best source sound possible. I might record a quick guitar lick or snare hit 30 times to find the sound I like. :p

LOL !
Well it sure is doing you some justice cause your mixes come out great in my opinion.
Sometimes I get impatient trying to find the right recorded sound and I shouldn't because that's when it's most crucial.
Thanks for the insight !

I'm not done with questions (I have many) but
I'm trying to get our new house ready to move into so I haven't had much spare time for music or for HR lately :(

If you're accusing me of ripping someone off, I don't appreciate that. It's based on a simple 1-4-5 progression. Everyone in the universe has used a variation of that chord progression at some point. Maybe that's why you think you heard it before. If that's not what you meant, then okay. I sincerely appreciate the rest of your feedback. Writing songs is not easy for me. :o

The guy is right Greg. Its a cool song and you COVERED it well. But dont try to deceive us, this is a song by the Luxurious Panthers based out of your home state of Texas! I seen them play here in Los Angeles a few years ago and I have their cd's!! Anybody that dont bvelieve me, look it up. But that being said, you did it very well. My kind of music indeed, thats why I bought their cd's.

Dude, I used to be in that band. I wrote this song. Seriously.

I had no idea those goofs still play it much less actually recorded it. That was several years ago. I should sue their ass.

I'm really sort of shocked they they're still playing and playing a song that I wrote. I'm even more shocked that someone knows it. We were called "Vampire Lovers" when I was with them. I went to high school with Ford and Robbie. The original version that we played was more stripped down than what I did to it here. I re-did some of the lyrics too. I need to find their version and call my lawyer.

Yup, Ford. Their lead singer. I liked their sound, but their live performance was very boring. I prob started listening to them about 5-6 years ago?

When we started playing, there was nothing rockabilly related happening in Houston. We were on an island. This was back in the early 90's. We all skated together. I had a punk band with Ford's brother (Robbie - aka Buddy), and Ford had his own band in College Station while he was at Texas A&M. Anyway, Ford graduated and moved back to the neighborhood. The drummer quit in my punk band, and Robbie didn't want to play rockabilly, So Ford and I found another bass player and started playing rockabilly. Ford wrote most of the songs, but I wrote 3 or 4 - this being one of them. The bass player quit, so Robbie stepped in and started getting into it. We plowed along all alone in the scene for about a year, then robbie went off to college. We got a new drummer and i switched to bass. that lasted a few months, then Ford and I got into a fight and that was it. I quit, and he and Robbie went on to form Luxurious Panthers. I don't think I've talked to either of them since.

Interesting. As a matter of fact, I even talked to Buddy (He's the skinny white guy right?) when we were both in the restroom and he was in the urinal next to mine. LOL. He was actually a very nice guy and really appreciated the scene here in LA, where its probably the biggest in the U.S.

Yeah Robbie was always cool. He and I had a much better friendship than Ford and I did - even way before we started playing music together. Ford was not liked by many people. I liked him fine because I'm a dickhead too, but he drank A LOT and was pretty obnoxious. I'd even venture to say that probably nobody liked him outside of his brother and me. I had a birthday party at my house one year, and he was there and got too drunk. He spit on my floor, I dragged him out and literally threw him off the porch, and that was it. No more band. It was bound to happen. We had gotten banned from most of the good places anyway because Ford was such a douche. It was fun though while it lasted.

But please understand that I would NEVER pass someone elses stuff off as my own. I'm not like that. I'm obviously A-OK with doing covers and giving credit to the original artists. My soundclick page has over 30 cover songs on it. But,this is my song. I'm kinda pissed that they're still playing it and selling it. I wonder if they're doing any of my other songs.

Understood bro. Yeah, Ford didnt really talk to anybody. It was Buddy and his GF, I believe, that were really enjoying the crowd. Not sure what other songs you wrote for them, but I have their cd's, so its probably on there. I like their song called "Texas Tragedy", Hot Rod Nissan, and Rockabilly Cat in outerspace.

Yeah Ford is a weirdo. The Ford I remember was pretty dark and twisted and it almost seemed like he was scared to be liked by anyone. He wasn't a bad guy, just strange. Lol. He used to keep the dirty underwear of the first girl he ever fucked in his guitar case to wipe off his Gretsch after the shows. It was like some kind of ritual thing. People would come up to us to say they liked the show or whatever and he'd shun them, or say something stupid. He turned a lot of people off to our music. Robbie and I were always trying to smooth things over.

I'll have to look at what they have and see if any of my other songs are in there. It's not a big deal though. I guess I'm happy if they think enough of those songs to still use them sometimes. I don't really remember most of them anyway. This one always stuck out in my head though because I liked it. I just used the words I could remember and added a few more. I really had no idea they were even playing still and I'm surprised that anyone would know who they are. Maybe they're doing pretty good. Good for them.

I still get their emails about upcoming shows and its always at the sam place, I think its called like "Walter's" or some crap like that? Yup, I know them alright. Im pretty deep in my rockabilly tastes. You should try to write more rockabilly tunes bro.

Cool. Thanks.

Hey do you know a guy/band called "Chadd Thomas and the Kings" or something like that? He's pretty clean-cut rockabilly from what I remember. I think he bases himself out of Austin now, but he's from Houston. He used to be my roomate and sort of "managed" that band I had with Ford. I sort of taught him how to play guitar and I think he's doing pretty well with his music now. :D

Never heard of them, but I just checked their Myspace. Pretty good. I like their lead guitar sound. I noticed they have Matt Hole and the Hot Rod Gang on their top friends. I have their cd too!

Thats a moving tune, Like it....and it has Strat 50's type tones....good energy too.

clean mix...what else to say!

its psycho-surfa-punkabilly

I wasn't friends with Chadd for too long, but I liked him. He was a little too over-the-top "daddy-o" rockabilly. He always wanted to "rumble" and really thought we were living in 1956. I don't really remember what happened between he and I, but we just kinda quit hanging out. I'm sure there was a chick involved in some way.

Anyway, this has been a nice run down memory lane. I haven't thought about this stuff in years. :D
