I just bought a tascam m 06 and a Concord 555 4 track tape deck for a combined total of 100 bucks. I was wondering if you guys had any info on either. I can't seem to find anything on either. I know the Tape deck is from 1965 and was a consumer grade product which is why i bought, i think it may sound cool, the heads looked good, the cosmetics were almost perfect and the seller claimed it to be in perfect workin condition and backed it with a year warranty for an extra 7 bucks.

Thanks guys,
-Barrett

My college room mate had the same Concord deck back in the dorm days (1967/8). It's a quarter track deck, not a 4 track. The difference is that you can only record two tracks at a time and then flip the tape to record the other two tracks. A 4 track allows you to record 4 tracks at a time on the full width of the tape. The M-06 was (sort of) the replacement for the Teac Model 2 of which I had two of in the mid '70's.

God dammit....I sent the guy an email that said, "Is this stereo or can I record 4 mono tracks simultaneously? There are only 2 channels that can be armed to record." and he told me that I can do 4 mono tracks... They do a 7 day return, so I'll play around with it and see if I want to keep it. It was only 60 bucks so maybe itll still be worth it.

Thanks for giving me a heads up thought, I appreciate it

Was it on eBay or something? When you get it, if it doesn't do what the seller described, you might be able to negotiate a partial refund.

Yeah it was ebay...(serves me right I suppose) The refund thing sounds like a really good idea. I guess I'll just have to decide if I think it's worth less than 61 dollars. But if its in good cosmetic and mechanical shape as promised I think it'll be ok, I won't feel very ripped off.

Thanks for the help MD!

By the way I got the M 06 today and it is a very cool machine. The Hi eq is super cool, when I turn it all the way down it's an ultra smooth natural sound, definitely something to be desired. It actually has a decent amount of outputs, I was surprised that 4 of the 6 channels have direct outs and there's actually 3 sets of main outputs, 2 RCA and 1 1/4" all three are stereo.

Maybe when the tape deck comes I'll post some recordings with the new setup.

You definitely should have researched that model prior to purchase but for $60 and it arrived seemingly unharmed by shipping, why not? I wouldn't bother with the return policy unless it was less than described. You can probably pull off some quality sounds with this setup if alls well.

EDIT: Oh, wait, you mean you haven't received the tape deck yet?:eek:

No I haven't gotten the tape deck yet, just the mixer which was in good shape. I checked shipping tracking and the tape deck will be here monday. I sent the seller of the tape deck the packaging links listed in the Analog only forum and he said that he would use that to pack. The seller was a vintage audio equipment store so I'm assuming (but more so hoping) this means they will handle it with much care.

When I saw the deck for sale I went looking on the internet and literally couldn't find any information on it and like you said for 60 bucks why not. The only thing I found was an ad from the 60's that gave a brief and vague description of it. Haha it gave the frequency response in "Cycles Per Second"! When did they start using the term Hertz? I'm aware they mean the same thing I had just never seen that before.

Thanks for all the help guys and I'll let you know how the tape deck arrives,

Yeah, pretty interesting deck but old and not spec'd too well. It's got one motor and in which case it probably relies too much on belts, pulleys and idlers and the rubber on those is going if not already gone. You might have problems with it and replacement of the fore mentioned parts will be more costly than the deck. Just want to give you a heads up of what to expect.

Also, you seem to be from Chicago and there must be local decks better than this one and maybe not that much more expensive but more capable.

Do yourself a favor and ask us before you make another purchase. ;)

I also seem to be 19, young and impulsive! I had some cash to burn and maybe if it needs fixin up I'll learn a few things in the process which would probably still be well worth the 60 bucks (plus the cost of new parts...). But I will definitely consult with the board prior to future purchases!

Thanks to all,
-Barrett
