Yeah so I was messing around with recording a song today. And of course I couldn't really find drums sounds I like. Then I had a problem with birds chirping and trucks driving by. And after all that I had an hour to record the vocals before it was time to pick up my kids. So, needless to say no vocals LOL. Just couldn't make it work. Anyways. How's it sound so far?

The bass sounds a little too growly for the rest - personally I'd take some off the top and add a little more bottom.
Otherwise seems to be happening well.

"A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity." - Falsely attributed to Sigmund Freud.
This has been sourced to General Introduction to Psychoanalysis [15] [16] [17] [18] due to a misreading of a 1990 essay by Don B. Kates [19]. The quote is Kates' own characterization of a passage in Freud and Oppenheim, Dreams in Folklore, and not Freud's words.

What do you mean by taking some off the top and adding more bottom? I was thinking about trying to do just an acoustic and vocal live recording. I'm not exactly sure why, but I can't seem to get vocals to sound super good. I need to do more experimenting I guess.

That's funny Freud is credited for that quote. Now I'll have to look up who actually coined the term... :p

I though EQ the bass to add more bottom end and cut a little bit of the definition/growl at the same time.

I'll give it a try. It seems the bass I'm using has that natural growl for some reason. I'll have to try lowering the bass volume knob to see if that helps. Guess it's got hot pickups :D

I thought it sounded pretty good overall. I agree the bass could have a stronger low end.

A small cut to the snare in the 800hz neighborhood might get rid of a little woofiness. Maybe a 3K-4K boost might help define the attack.

A high shelf EQ boost on the mandolin might brighten it up a bit. But I'd definitely go easy on that, if at all.

the tone is pretty good. i would like to hear more of that lead guitar. the drums may have a tad too much in the highs in your overheads. i think the separation between the kick and the bass is well done. the snare does seem like it's separate from the cymbals, but it's not awful at all.
there's a lot of subjectivity in recording tone, just like a style of music. if you wanted to turn up the bass guitar, you could, but it's fine how it is. you could also turn it down. some people think if it's too clear, it will sound too commercial-ly and lacks soul, some people think if it's too muddy, it's not professional or sell-able.

i'm listening on behringer truths.

one thing i do when i take critique into consideration is listen to what the other people record. i'm way out there as far as style goes, but I took a lot of recording classes (music major - 8 years ago) in college and listened to and mixed different things then and since. listen to rayc's stuff and make your adjustments accordingly.

Hey thanks, I'll try it out. You're right I did a bass roll off on it and brightened it up a bit. I'll mess around with it again when I have time. What you're hearing is actually just a classical guitar and not a mandolin lol :guitar:

Word bro. I was thinking I needed to turn down the ride a bit because it seems way too loud which could be why it sounds overly bright.
