So I'm recording my friend's band. Here's the first mix I did of one of their songs.

I want to bring the kick out more (not make it louder, but more noticable).

Let me know what you think:

Fading Fast - Close Calls (.mp3, 192, 3.70MB)

I agree with NL5. It seems to be a bit muffled. Overcompressed maybe? Good song otherwise.

I agree that the kick needs some more of that, I'm just stumped as to how to do it. It sounds really good by itself with the bass guitar and drums, but when the guitars are added it allll goes away.

Damn you masking!!!

that snare sounds... bad. the bass drum seems acceptable to me. the snare just soudns really muffled and overly dry. but i think its a real good mix other than that. the vocals sound good even though i don't like how he yells.

Sounds similar to Refused or something like that. Hard to tell much about the mix when it's as muffled sounding as it is. Not bright enough in my opinion. I'd try to take away some of the attack of the bass and put the kick's click in that frequency space and do whatever you have to to make the mix more present.

the bass is solid for that style of music. i wouldn't change it personally. i was thinking maybe adding some more high end to the guitars and lowering their level might be an ok manuever to make that bass drum bounce even more.

i just realized that at 1:03 its a total ripoff/homage to american nightmare - postmark my compass at 55 seconds :)

Dip some 3k out of your guitars, then add some 3k to you kick drum.
Thats a good place to start.
If you find your guitars are too dark sounding at that point try adding some 10k to get some top back into them.

Keep in mind this is just general info, youll need to really use you ears to make it happen.

Boy, this takes me back.
I like it. The song, not exactly the mix.
However, for oldschool stuff, the mix is just perfect.
Nice job.

I'll bring it down to see if it unmuffles it. I have a UAD-1 1176 on it right now.

The snare is completely dry. I haven't really gotten around to adding reverb or anything on it. The actual snare track sounds like ass, so I don't really know what I'm going to do about that.

Hey hey. Right now all of my guitars are dipped at around 2.8k and my kick is bumped there (that's where the click is). Then my guitars are bumped up around 3kish to make up for it. It's obviously not working right now. Does the mean I should make bigger dips and bumps, or what?

What don't you like about the mix?

Thanks for everybody's feedback.

If it were me, I'd sample the snare drum if it sounds like ass. Not sure if it would screw up the feel in this kind of a song, but with something as integral to the mix as the snare, my feeling is that it's gotta sound really good going in. Or sample a good one and mix it with the one you recorded.

Like I said, the mix is perfect for the style. I didn't think before I said that I didn't like the mix and apparently forgot to use the backspace button.

When he does the really slow beats the snare sounds good to me, so I think I'm going to sample one of those and put it in the fast parts, where he's barely touching the snare.
