Hey all. Set up my kit with 8 mics for the first time yesterday. I wanted to close mic the toms and figured I'd try the underside of the snare too, just for funsies. Results were pretty mixed. I like the kick and I think the toms could sound good, but the snare really needs to be tuned down a little and the OHs make the whole kit sound kinda trashy? 
As for the specific questions: how far off the toms do you guys place your dynamic mics? I'm using various sennheisers with rim clips but I have them set quite close - maybe 1" away, max. Likewise with the snare - should I be pulling back a bit in both cases?
Next, I have a fairly live room - 30' x 15', wooden floors, glass roof and long windows in two out of four walls. I'm wondering if this is too much reflection and whether I should buffer with gobos 3 or four feet out from the kick?
Also, with regard to gating - what exactly do you guys gate? All but the OHs? Or do you let the kick and snare do their thing and gate just the toms?
