Hello I'm a total NOOB here, which is what brought me here in the first place. I played guitar for the last 15 years, and now that my son is old enough I'm putting together somewhat of a basement studio for us to bond in.

I've got plenty of instrument knowledge, I own a US Fat Strat, Godin Freeway Classic, Seagull 12 String, Seagull 6 String, Freeway4 Bass, Marshall, Peavey, and Roland Amps and I just bought my son a Roland electronic drum kit.

Now my questions. I just inherited a Peavey PA system for vocals but there is no reverb. I'm wondering what is the cheapest way to go to add effects like reverb to voice? Can I plug in a guitar reverb pedal???? Or is there another inexpensive way to achieve this???? Is there computer programs that could synthesize voice and project it out of a PA??????

I've got a kickass computer sitting right beside my mixingpower amp. and am ready to play!!!

Thank You

Well, it sounds to me like you're more concerned about cost than quality, which is fine if you're just wanting to fart around in the studio with your son. I think that's great that you're wanting to pass your knowledge of music on to him and improve your relationship in the process.

So assuming your budget is low I'll recommend a few options.

1. Don't use a guitar reverb pedal, you'll probably find it's not designed for vocals. They tend to be a little more noisy and too over-the-top for vocal recordings.

2. Do look into your existing recording equipment and make sure that you don't already have some reverb capabilities. Many newcomers to recording go out and buy a $700 rack for reverb, only to later find that their multitrack already had it built in, and sounds quite good.

3. If you want to get the ball rolling fast and inexpensively, try some audio editing software. I personally recommend Goldwave, although I don't have to use it much anymore. You can get a free trial of Goldwave, and licenses are cheap..or certain sites offer not-so-legal cracks for a free full license. Goldwave is a great tool to add even if you don't end up using any of the effects, but I suspect you may end up liking a lot of them.

Hey pepper>

Just a few things to consider about home recording before making an expensive mistake.

1) There are plenty of free demo versions of recording software and plugins (effects, soft synths, etc) that are available. It is a good idea to try these out before you commit to any host software.

2) Keep in mind that if you do splurge for a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), that there are lots of expenses that go along with it, such as. software, mics, mixers and/or interfaces, monitors, midi equip.etc. so think about what it is you yu "really: want out of your studio.

3) Another alternative is to get an all-in-one recorder/mixer/cd-burner. these things have come down in price over the past few years. Then all you would need are some cables to connect with. These units typically come with all the bell and whistles you will need to create music.

Anyway...just something to think about, if you haven't already! :D

for years i used guitar fx pedals for FX on vocals (and any instrument)
it rocked,
yeah, noizy, no super sound, no great controls, so what,
i was doing underground stuff and it rocked,
so experiment with it, take one of your stom boxes, connect it to the AUX of your mixer and have fun with it,
if you like the sound you have, nice, if it totally sucks, then you might want to invest in a little 19" verb,
i got a real cheap lexicon alex, 16 preset reverbs, u can adjust the decay and delay, sounds better than lots of other REAL cheap verbs i heard, but .... no more than that.... its nice...cause its cheap

my next verb unit will be the Rumour
