Some Acoustic Folk Tunes...

Hello,
I have a few RA files of my new folk music CD online. The downloads are encoded at 80kbs
(not the best quality but can post higher quality if anyone's interested)

Tech stuff: recorder: Yamaha MD4S (multitrack minidisc) except 1st song - Tascam 424MKII
Mics - vocals AT4033, guitars - TOA K2 (a few guitars were recorded with the AT4033 as well)
all into an Aphex 107 pre.
Piano was a General Music Pro 1.

Mixed down to my PC with an Alesis nanoverb. Wavs fixed up (some level adjusting, compression)
with Cool Edit 96.

Comments much appreciated.

On my wish list - two RNC's to help with tracking as well as mixdown, trash the TOA and get either
Matched stereo pair of Octava MC012s (from Sound Room!) or Neumman KM184
(or similar small mic for ac. guitar i.e. AT4041 or SM81)

I do. Check-out the song Paralell (mastered or unmastered version) or The Kiss in this forum.

I'd love to listen to yours, but I don't have a sound card on my work comupter which has access to the net.

drstawl was nice enough to put these up for me.
 
The MC012s from The Sound Room are nice, but not nearly as nice as the KM184s; what do you want with nearly $1kUS difference?

If considereing the KM184s, I'd also consider the Elation 201s The Sound Room only for $850US w/ 1 cap of choice or $1200 w/ 2 caps of choice. I admit I can hear a difference. But that's just a difference in tone, not in quailty in my opinion; although the KM184 has a higher output.

I like them all. The MC012s are in a lower league. They're budget mics. Now the KM184s and 201s are in the same league regardless of the nearly double or cut in half price difference. I feel even if you do like the sound of the KM184s over the 201s, you won't like them nearly enough to spend the extra $750US for them.

Besides, if you'd like another large diaphragm mic in the future, you just need to spend $350US on the M1 and you a have very high quality large diaphrgam mic. I heard the M1 on the MC012 body and it floored me.

KM184. I'm sure either of them will be an improvement over my TOA K2. Now all
I have to do is find a way to minimize the guitar bleeding into my AT4033!

PS- I tried this last night and it worked suprisingly well: Just my AT4033,
about 1 foot from me, halfway between my mouth and my soundhole (Taylor 710) Going into my Aphex pre=>MD4S. Lack of compression didn't seem to be a problem and I was able to tweak the EQ a bit to get a good balance between my voice and guitar.
The best part - I only used 1 track!

I know what you mean. I've had the same results; only with a 103.
 
Nice work, if you get around to it, you should post an MP3 or two so we can get a better idea of the quality of the recording. I'd love to hear that. I like what I hear though, it has a lot of feeling behind it!
 
CMiller - Thanks for the listen! I can post an MP3 (or two) tonight - any preferences for songs to post? I might also post my song from last night which I recorded with just my AT4033.

I don't have any suggestions. Post anything you might be particularly proud of songwriting wise, or just recording wise. Maybe there's a tune you think is missing something. I don't know how long you've been hanging out on this BB, but this is a great place to get honest opinions. The support for eachother here is the best on the web. I look forward to hearing what you've posted!
 
I posted an MP3 called "Forgotten" The words come from a poem written by a child in Europe during WWII. I put the words to music. Any comments?

I thought the piano was real, just under mic'd...seriously, it had that echo thing that uprights have...good mix...I'm not really into folk music but this song had a sort of vibe going.....

I agree with the gibs on that piano statement, I thought it was a real one too, until I actually read that it wasn't an upright. Nice sounding and good mix I thought. That was written by a child? They must have gone through some tough sh*t.

Sounds good Evan, I echo what everyone else said about the piano. I also like the guitar. How long have you been recording?
 
Sounds great, good work, good to hear folk music. Only problem I have is noticable flutter heard mostly in the beginning acoustic guitar. I don't know what would cause it, if anyone knows, reply.
