Solo buttons on mackie sr24 do nothing

I think I bought a lemon when I got this thing because I've never been able to solo anything. I always figured I was doing something wrong but I never really needed the solo function before so I didnt think anything of it. Now that I am considering selling it I was testing all the functions and after reading the manual I still cant get the solo buttons to do anything but make some lights flash. There is no change in the audio at all. It doesnt matter what channel, aux, or bus, muted or unmuted, pre fader or post fader. They do nothing at all. This sucks because I've had this thing for almost 2 years. Do you think mackie will help me out this far down the line? I am the original registered owner. I don't think I'll buy another mackie, thats for sure.
 
The SOLO buttons don't affect the main outputs -- only the monitor/headphone outputs.........
 
That's interesting. The last time I used someones' 24/4 it didn't work there either, not even in the headphone jack.

It's true, like mentioned the solor only works on the monitors and the headphones. A tad strange if u ask me since mixers like these are mainly used in project studio's (i'd say) so one could imagine that only the mains- or master outs will be used.

The least things they could have tried is to make it switchable to mains or monitor.

btw. I own a behringer 2442 but it works the same.
 
You don't want the solo buttons to be working on the mains/2-track output - it would interfere with mixes as you mixdown.........!
 
Hmm.. Makes sense. Now I feel stoopid. I'll go mess with it and come back.
 
The SR in the name might give you a clue, too. It stands for Sound Reinforcement - it was designed as a live sound mixer. In that situation, you pretty much NEVER want the solo coming out the mains. You do need to be able to solo things in the headphones (e.g. for tracking down which channel is making that nasty noise...).

And they'll only affect the headphones if they're set to the monitor path (rather than the mains).......
 
Well I did some testing, it seems the solo function works on just the main meters and headphone outs, and not the buses or the aux outs. I have yet to check to see if the actual signal on main outs is being changed or not (I was in a hurry when I was trying to test it.) I'm just trying to make sure theres nothing wrong with my mixer so I can sell it and maybe get that 16 channel Allen and Heath board that someone was talking about.

Right now I have the board set up kind of weird, I'm recording vocals with one mic going to buses 1-2 which then goes to my computer, then the output of my computer is going to two other channels on the board which go to buses 3-4 which are feeding my monitors. The main outs are feeding the headphone amp in the tracking room.

I have worked with the SR24 for a year or so before, and i figured a glitched in the circuit.

if the channel is in mute, the solos don't work...
the channels have to be unmuted...
when u select solo, the headphones will hear whatever is soloed...

check the control room level too~
i use an XDR 1604 and a 1202 now...
 
OK, question the follows this line here. I just got a Spirit E12 board. I dont have my monitors set up yet (don't have speaker cables yet), but I wanted to check and make sure each channel worked, as I bought it used. I used the headphone jack. I could only hear a channel if it was on solo. Is this how is should be? Also, the faders never affected the level, only the phones knob (which I assume is how it should be). But does this mean you can't check the volume of the board through headphones? Am I missing something?

BTW: I am new to this, so sorry if this is an insultingly easy question.
 
Uladine it sounds like the mixer is working fine.

You guys need to read your manuals. The exact functions of all these buttons are layed out and everything is working correctly.

Look up 'Solo in Place' and 'PFL'.
 
I have read over my manual, however, the information dealing with headphones is rather limited, as is the section on "solo"

BTW: Tex, the original postings on this thread are over a year old, so I would hope they have their problems figured out by now! :)
 
Doh! Then why didn't you just start a new thread?

Your mixer should have a switch to determine what you are monitoring on the cans. You may have been monitoring the 3/4 buss that uses the SOLO button to route tracks to it or something like that.

Look up those terms I mentioned and it should help you out.
