Solo brass mix

Hi, I record solo trombone. Can I ask some questions? My equipment is One Apex 205 ribbon mic. One Shure 58. And I plug them into a Focusrite USB 6 Saffire device. My room is small and dry and I stand about 2 feet from the mics with the trombone bell pointing a bit down. I think thats the best position in this room.

My question is. In Cubase, what effects should I use? What I do is some reverb, and some Compressor. Is this normal to do? I think it sounds better then. Some say I should not use anything. Will it sound natural then? To me it dont.

If I want a mix where there are lot of dynamic but still can listen the soft parts, how to do that?

In the reverb I know I just have to use my ears and listen, but do you have any tips to the different parameters in the reverb effect? The room I play are nearly dead. Its small and lot of textiles around.

Its maybe the same questions you have seen many times here(sorry), but hope some have experience with this situation?:)

There is no right or wrong. It's what sounds good to YOU that counts.

Brass instruments can be tricky--and there are also a lot of different ideas of what they should sound like, from soothing and mellow to strident and, er, brassy!

In a dry room, yes, a bit of reverb can be nice--giving things a slightly "haunting" quality. I also tend to apply a bit of EQ to take out a bit of the harshness--but that's just me.

Compression? again, it depends on what you're after but sometimes a bit of light compression to narrow the dynamics slightly can be good.

But, again, the most important thing is the sound YOU want. If somebody says "the only way to do it is...." they're almost always talking through their hat.

How to take out that harshness with EQ Bobbsy?
I want to try. Wich frequency and do you add or take away.

Well, I do it by ear so there's no specific frequency...but it often sounds to me like some trombonists are straining just at bit at their highest frequencies. Assuming an alto or tenor trombone, I probably start with a minor amount of cut (3 or 4 dB) above about 400Hz...maybe up to 600 or so. However, as I say, I do it by listening, not by the numbers!

Thanks again. Look like listen is a keyword in all aspects of music? I try to "tune" up my ears and try out some things. Its easy to go "blind" and do too much? Anyway thanks for help.
