Solid programs that suddenly start freezing and (not responding)

Maybe you guys can troubleshoot this...
Recording program, very solid, hassle free for several years.
In the middle of some work, it starts locking up right after I stop record. The only time it does is when I stop recording.
It will lock up anywhere from 20 seconds to about 2 minutes, occasionally flashing/flickering, and sometimes the (not responding) thing will pop up at the top on the blue bar for a few seconds. It seems to be having trouble drawing the waveforms.
My first step, took off 20 gigs of material, defragged... no help.
2nd step, uninstalled, re-installed, installed updates, still doing it.
Checked my processes: all is good and average, about 20% on the program until I stop recording, at which time it slams it at 99% for an extended period of time, even for 1 second of single track (mono) audio. During this time I cant do anything at all.
My next step is to uninstall and re-install the soundcard drivers. If that doest work, I'm thinking I have some a stick of DDR going bad and I may swap them around to see if that remedies it.
I can remember nothing I changed to cause this to happen.
Any thoughts?

sounds more like a hardware problem ---bring up your task manager and have it in the background when it locks up ---banging the CPU to 100% is either a CPU overload or going out or a memory stick gone bad ( buss speeds?)--check your page file and your physical memory and cache loads also

Yeah, my first guess usually be bad RAM, except that this is directly related to recent high levels of activity, which usually suggests a thermal problem (probably either insufficient airflow or an improperly mounted CPU or GPU heat sink). Try opening the side of the case and aiming a fan at it and see if the problem continues. If it goes away, you've found the problem.

I say Just Reformat your Drives and re-Install Windows and then Install your Drivers and Software and start over again....

This will solve your Problems if they are Software or Driver Related and you pretty much should do this once every couple years at least, I do it every 6 Months or so just for Stability sake.....

Cheers

I would reformat, but installing DFH Superior takes like 4 hours+ Sucks.
Its all new as of January anyway.
I'll try the ram first and see.

I suggest then that the next time you re-install windows and reformat that you make a Disk Image useing something like Norton Ghost which you can use to Restore your System if you ever have problems again....

Haveing a Disk Image arround is really handy as you can restore a disk image faster that installing wondows and it re-installs all your software and drivers and everything .....
It is good to make your Disk Image on a DVD-RW so you can Update it every time you do a system change like adding hardware or software ,as opposed to have to Make a New Disk image and throwing the old one away every time to change something......

Good Luck

If you're running XP, do a system restore to a point before this started happening.

If it still occurs, it's hardware related.

Yup .

Tubie... don't guess, go find out.

1) Read the Event logs for System and Application
2) Download Memtest86 and make a bootable CDROM
3) Download SANDRA or similar, and let it run on your system.
4) Enable SMART in your BIOS if supported... this warns you about disk errors

The advice for GHOST is good advice indeed.

As I'm writing this, I'm rebuilding my brand new Dell 6400 laptop to get rid of the bundled junk. The only way is by wiping clean and starting fresh.

Check into BART-PE for use with GHOST. I use it in my computer business, and would rather leave home without my American Express card, as long as I have BART with me. It supports USB external drives, so you have an easy place to store Ghost images.

wipe clean

yo, man
for a 100% peace of mind I always find erasing the HD and re-installing the lot is best. 'course it takes time, but at least you know that, should the issue persist, it's then a hardware fault and you need to look maybe at your RAM

as for me, I wipe clean everything once a year to keep a relatively junk free system

pizza and love every1

Turns out, somehow, that the picture cache for Sonar was overstuffed. Cleaning it out solved the problem instantly. Strange considering this hard drive has been going for 3 months with Sonar 5 on it only, and my last hard drive was going over 3 years starting with Sonar 1, then 2, then 3, and NEVER had the picture cache cleared out, and its still a champ.
Thanks for the suggestions. Glad I found this before I wiped everything out, though, eh? :)
