MIDI files are played with synths or with sound fonts. For example, some sound cards (Sound Blaster Live!, e.g.) can use sound fonts (wav. samples) loaded into memory to play MIDI files. The better the samples the better the sound. A Live! Value card runs about $50 and comes with Vienna Soundfont Studio to help you configure your own soundfonts and a built in EMU sampler so you can create your own soundfonts using .wav samples.

You're actually saying that loading fonts is unavaliable using a standard SB card, only using a card with internal memory?

I though these softwares use the PC internal RAM for this purpose ...

No, that's not what I'm saying. I don't know what Soundblaster cards have soundfont capability, perhaps all of them. I just know the Live! does because I use it. And I meant RAM when I mentioned memory, and that's what the Soundblaster uses.

Up to 50% of your system RAM can be used for soundfonts. So if you have 128mb RAM, you can use soundfont files as large as 64mb. That means you have the potential of using very high quality soundfonts with this card, depending on the amount of RAM you have (and it's very cheap now, BTW). For comparison, the soundfonts that come with the Live! are only 2, 4, and 8mb soundfonts--not very high quality.

You should read the articles I linked for you.
