i use cool edit for recording vocals, guitars and bas. wat is the best software for drums programming???? wny ideas??? what abt cakewalk???

what i use is a good complement to cool edit as it has things like a slew of midi features in it as well as a drum pattern maker, so you dont need a drum machine, as well a new feature is vocal pitch correction and harmonisation.
and its 49 bucks. try the demo of powertracks at pgmusic.com.
also there are lots of free tutorials in the support section including ones on drum programming etc etc. also band in a box does some neat drum things.
and will auto generate a back up band including drums so you just add your vocals and guitar etc. its a very good songwriters tool used by loads of musicians and educators.just try the demos sometime. peace.

Sonar will let you make audio loops and then Acidize them. It has a great plugin
called Cyclone for wave or Acid loops too. Basically, Sonar does everything you
are looking for, except it doesn't have a Tracker grid per se, but rather, a piano roll grid
that does the same thing. And you can use VST or DXi plug ins for the drumkits you
want. It's probably the best all in one program to do everything(audio and midi), if you are willing to learn it.

if you have a sequencing program that supports vsti plugins, give BFD serious consideration. It is a sample library of tons of drums, check it out at www.fxpansion.com

I just ordered Drums on Demand the other day. Should be here in the mail today or tomorrow. It's not really a program, just loops, but I hear (both reading and listening to samples on their website) that they are pretty good and pretty easy to use. The sounds are all acoustic sets, geared mostly to pop/rock. I'll let you know what I think after I play around with it. I just ordered Volume 1. It was 50 bucks. Not bad if they are really as good sounding and as versatile as their users make them out to be.

I've also played around with the demo of Groove Agent (vst plug program). Really cool concept there.

kick ass program! it was a bitch to setup in cakewalk... some kind of wierd vst plugin bug... it has the most natural sounding drums out there! i like it better than battery.

hey Genob. good to know someone currently using it. how do you find programming drums in general? is it tedious or efficient? are there premade patterns that you can tweak?

I've been using Drumsite lately (http://www.guitar.sk/drums/drums_main.htm). It's about $50 US (there is a free evaluation version), has fairly realistic sounding samples (almost too good for use in my otherwise lo-fi setup), and is super easy to program. It is an external program, not a plugin. I like it much better than the MIDI drum machine in Cubase SE, though I use both (come up with the initial patterns in Cubase, replace the sounds in Drumsite, then import the wav files back to cubase). I've also tried Fruity Loops demo version, but the samples were way too techno/house for my music (folk-pop).

Programming drums can be tedious.... I take my time when doing drums.. I always sit there and pretend i'm playing them so I know not to write drums as if I had 5 hands... (hitting cymbals, toms, and snare at the same time is bad... :D )

I don't use premade patterns because I usually have to deal with wierd changes and things like that. There are a bunch of premade grooves out there to get started with if you don't want to get into writing custom drums.

BFD is a nice program to use. It has a few flaws that can be worked around...

What I usually do is, I write the drums in cakewalk using a general midi package, then bounce the tracks through the BFD stereo plugin. (*NOTE - I write the drums track by track meaning, bass has its own, snare has its own, etc, it makes EQing and volume work MUCH MUCH EASIER!).

When I have a snare track for example, I write it using general midi, then the BFD DXI plugin in cakewalk, create a seperate midi track for the BFD SNARE, and then load the snare into BFD and bounce the track THROUGH the plugin to get the beautiful snare which ends up being bounced to an audio track... it can be a pain in the ass, but the results cannot be matched! You would not know the difference between the output and a real drummer, believe me!

ya that's what i'm shooting for, as realistic as possible. i assumed it worked that way, just make a midi track up with sonar and route it to the appropriate channel in the BFD plug in. thanks.
