I've been using Hammerhead for sequencing beats and while it has
worked for most of my songs I'm running into a few limitations:
1. 3/4 patterns require major editing of the streamed pattern (haven't
done it successfully yet)
2. its limited to 16th notes so I cannot do triplets effectively
3. combining duplet and triplet patterns require streaming separate
patterns at fractionally related tempi and joing in audio editing
software

These are patterns I could score easily so a MIDI-related solution may
be good.

Also willing to consider a sub-$200 hardware solution

thanks

i mainly work with acoustic drums so

my knowledge in this area is not the greatest but when I need to sequence drums i just use fruity loops. Its simple to use, cheap ($100-150) and can fix most of the problems you are describing. Triplets are easy to do, and in the newest version FL Studio, changing time signatures on every pattern is a no brainer.

Yep, Fruity Loops can do all types of time signatures. In FL Studio, each pattern can be a different time signature, and with the piano roll, you're unlimited with options.
