I'm just starting to get interested in using software delays. Sonar4 comes with the Sonitus Delay plus the standard Cakewalk delay, and I also have the UAD-1 delay and Dave Brown's freebie. Is it worth it to starting scouting out other delay plugins? Is there anything out there considered a step up from what I already have?

Teacher, you are right. After trying the stuff I already have - can't find anything to complain about.

Just to satisfy your curiosity you might want to take check out Waves' Supertap, a high quality and easy to program delay, and also the OhmBoyz plugin for some different and more extreme sounds (dub style delays, reverse, etc.)

I have a UAD-1 also,but I always use the Dave Brown delay.

I mean, "What makes it your 'goto' delay"...

It's just a personal preference.More for guitar than vocals.
It sounds the most like a grungy stomp box to my ears.
I find the Cakewalk FX to be mediocre and uninspiring.

But that's just me.

That's cool - I am always interested to see how other people are hearing and using things...

Thanks for letting me know.

I really like the Lexicon PSP42 plug. Whether it'd be a step up for you or not I don't know as I haven't used what you currently have.

There's a free demo so you may as well give it a try?

For what plug ins are costing, plus their CPU load, I abandoned internal reverbs and delay. I picked up a TC M1 for $200, a Lexicon MX200 for $200 and now I have 4 engines of reverb and delay (two engines in each box) which covers all my needs. Plus external hardware, even low cost, just sounds better.

I keep the UAD just for compression and EQ.

This approach gives you more tracks, less CPU load and a better overall sound.

You can beat the software reverbs with harware cheaply, but you can't touch the compression and EQ of the UAD-1 for anywhere near the price in hardware.

Completely agree. The closest you might come for one channel of Distressor is over $1K.

Kevin,

I've often wondered about this plug and downloaded the demo a long time ago. The trial period expired. At the time I probably didn't have the knowlege to really appreciate it. What do you like about it (above other delay plugins)?

have you auditioned a RNLA?

Well now there's a thought. No I haven't. Are you saying the RNLA is in the Distressor league? If so, I'm all ears, er eyes.

The way it sounds?

I could offer a few descriptors but they would be subjective and of little use to you in describing the merits of the plug. Also I don't have experience of really good quality hardware delays.

The most I can say is that it sounds pretty natural to me (I know, not a word you'd usually associate with a delay unit).

Like most of these things i just like the way it sounds.

Sorry, that's not helpful at all. :o

Who is this Dave Brown fellow, and where can I get this delay for myself? I ask, you see, because I heard the word "free"...

Ah yes. And his other stuff is pretty good for the meager prices charged.
