I'd like to get into using some software synths but I have absolutely no experience in the area. Do you guys know of any cool programs I could download to get me started? I don't have a real synthesizer or a midi controller so it would be good if I could use my comp keyboard. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :D

Check out www.kvr.com for some cool free synths.

Buy yourself a copy of Computer Music magazine as every issue comes bundled with a DVD that contains full version of their music studio that includes a sequencer and some synths and samplers.

Controlling synths from the computer keyboard is a PITA. Firstly not all synths respond to it, secondly... it just doesn't work for most cases. It might be easier to program synth parts in a sequencer with the mouse. However, when you get a chance do yourself a favor and get a controller, there are many inexpensive yet rather capable models around.

Can't anyone do a damn search around here??????????

well if you do a google search for "software synths" KVR doesn't come up (at least not in the first 4 pages).

However if you do a google search for "audio plug-ins" it's the first one that shows up.

Isn't his question the kind of thing that's supposed to get asked around here?

Thanks for correcting RAK :) And work and well, had to do it in a hurry... ahem ;)

UM, do a search ON THESE forums., This gets asked about twice a week. EACH time it gets answered with a link to krvaudio.

Not twice a week.

So what?

(Here's where a very straightforward honest question gets completely blown out into a 5 page thread that, by the end of it, has nothing to do with the original question.)

Higher signal to noise ratio.
Less crap to wade through.
Less irritation, like your posts.

Trust me, when you 've been around for awhile, it'll irritate the hell outta you

I don't think I will trust you on that. This isn't the first time I've been in an educational setting regarding music and/or audio. I can understand why it can be irritating to some though.

I liked the S:N Ratio part. Makes sense to me. :)

Well, as some said it, for free soft synths you should go to KVR page and there you can get info about it and dowload directly from there
If you want comercial soft synths you can also get info about it on KVR
Check the "Rating" page there and see the list for the best soft synths both free and commercial

Personally, as I work only with music production ( and I produce eletronic music) I use a lot of those soft synths and my favorite one is Absynth3
A truly legend

Nice...

Thanks for the help. I checked out the KVR page and it's awesome. They also have tons of free VST plugins. Rock!
