Hi KIDVYBES,

Are you saying then that the K6 is more or less in the same ballpark
as my MODDED alcatron?
The low gain on my shiny has been a challenge on quiet sources.

...I had 3 different stock Alctron ribbon mics before I purchased the K6...after comparing the K6 on different sources to the Alctrons, I decided to sell the 3 Alctrons...I found the K6 to be the most versatile of the group, sounding the best on most sources...and the phantom-powered aspect allows me to use the K6 with any of my mic pres, no problem...as far as comparing it to your "modded" Alctron, I can't comment...keep in mind that Karma offers a "Free 7-Day Trial" period on all of their mics, so you could make that comparison yourself before commiting to purchase...it will definately improve your "gain issues"... ;)

...an acoustic most of the time with some mandolin and banjo and fiddle...

Have you condsidered the fabulous MSH-1O SDC Omnis? They work very well for those instruments.

I like cheese.
Jarlsberg
Comte
Aged Gouda
mmm...cheese.

...funny...I woulda guessed "goat cheese" to top your list (as in "taste the goat cheese")... :D

Yes i have thought of those, was able to pick up a pair of the Karma units cheaper, now it is a matter of finding a better vocal sound.

RM-4 Dual Ribbon Microphone

Here's a "Steller" Dual Ribbon mic. I'm sure it's the same mic as some of the more popular "cheap" brands. It's asking price is $175 BUT!! You can use the "Make offer" feature and likely get it for $100-$120. I got one, I like it. No, I'm not the seller. For $100 bucks you cannot go wrong.

Oh, and tell him ekojasyabe sent ya!

That's where the phrase came from. ;)

What have you used it on?

The usual suspects like vocals and acoustic guitar. I haven't completed a song using it yet but it seems for some of my acoustic or more mellow songs it's going to work nice in the mix. I'm sure it must be branded and sold by others for a much higher price, but I'd recommend it to anyone on a budget who wants to add a ribbon mic to their mic locker.

You need a good, quiet, high gain pre with any ribbon mic. Get the AEA TRP, and many ribbons sound great.

I have the Beyer M500, Shiny 46 mxl, R121 and R84. The Shiny is Ok, but the others are so much better I rarely use the 46. The M500 is very underrated.

The AEA TRP made a big difference in the sound of all of the mics.

But who else should I take a long look at, at what kind of price range?
It depends on what you want to use it for. I've got a Royer R-121 that lives on amps/cabs. It's absolutely stellar in that application. I think they go for around $1100 now.
