I hear a lot of people thrashing on this mic, but I dont get it, to me it sounds smooth, detailed and generally nice.

What is it that you dont like about this mic on vox?

I like the mic a lot... it's quite nice on vocals... But I haven't heard people trash it... quite the opposite....

You been hanging around with rookies again Jag??? ;)

:D :D

Hell, I have two and they'll be prying them out of my cold dead fingers. But like any mic, expensive or cheap, they're not right for everything. They're pure majic on some vocalists and blow dead goats on another. YMMV.

Sweet. Two people whose opinion I highly respect like the 4033. I think my voice must be one of those where it sounds magical cos it sounds soooo good.

In the book "Behind the Glass" producer Alan Parsons said it was his favorite vocal mic......that comment has more weight than some homerecc'er proclaiming "it sucks dude".

It's a crowded market for under $500 mikes, and there isn't one mic that does it all. You've got to build a collection of mikes that fill various niches. The 4033 fills quite a few for me.

"Blows dead goats". hehehehehe

Anyway, Cyan, you're right, so save your shekels, return the blueberry with compliments, and ride (apparent) 2nd class with a sooooooo good sound. Makes sense to me. Sound is the first priority in this game.

Tell you what. You get one, and then it'll be the next one that I try on vocals as well... :)

Id be curious to see a thread where someone trashed the 4033.....

the only thing i see going on is being this is HOMErecording.com and a lot of us are "bottom feeders", we tend to go for v67's and C1's because of the price/performance ratio....sure the 4033 is a little smoother than the v67 on some voices, but are you willing to pay $200 more for it?....

Something about the fact that the blueberry was mic of the year of three different publications means that I'll never sell it. Its a mind thing. Its better than the 4033 and I cant imagine the 4033 being my only condenser. The 4033 comes close. On a scale of 1-10,
blueberry, 8
4033, 7.3492
shure sm58, 6

My next vocal chain purchases are a TLM 103 and a peavey vmp2.
This time, its not open to discussion. THere is just something about seeing a Neumann staring back at you in the middle of the night.

I was considering it thinking that a large diaphragm worked best for vox and amp micing, but then I realized it's not really considered an LD. I figure I've got 4 bills I can spend on a mic this year. 4033, NTK, NT1000, SP TB1? Wish there was a way to demo them all.

I like the 4033, its a nice sounding mic ..I love it on elec. guitar..and its not that expensive $299.00

Don

for that same $299, i can have

1 Marshall MXLv67
1 Shure SM57
2 Behringer ECM 8000's

so i can have the one mic (4033) ort he 4 i listed....ill take the 4....there isnt much i cant do with those 4 mics......

I love the 4033...

To me it has a scooped out crisp clear sound...

I find tubes are too warm, and fat sounding...

and I know thats against the grain of most people, but hey, I didn't ask for these ears... they just ended up on my head.. :D

"On a scale of 1-10,

That is really impressive. You're worth your weight in chips sometimes, Cyan. :)

And Gidge, I have an SM57 and an ECM 8000 already, so...

I love the sound of the 4033, the 4050 and 4060. And my golden-eared bride agrees. We're only divided on the 4047 -- I liked it, she was indifferent to it. But all four of those 4000-series ATs sounded excellent, and at decent used prices, they're a great buy.

Good call. So Neumann makes blow up dolls?

That was great tubedude!

CyanJaguar,

Yeah, don't know where you heard thhat about the 4033... I've heard NOTHING BUT good comments! And 100% agree!

I saw your thread about the Blueberry... Congrats! I haven't even heard it yet! I've only heard the Dragonfly and Mouse, and would take a Dragonfly over a Mouse ANY day! Anyhow, I look forward to hearing some work you do with it...

getuhgrip,

Don't let the "technical fact" of the 4033 being technically a small diaphragm fool ya. It sounds more "large diaphragm" than quite a few others in it's range.

What about considering the AT4033 a Medium D mic? Thats what ive always heard of it as. ;)

Darnold

It's not that I don't like my 4033. I just haven't used it once since I bought the Rode NTK and NT1000. I don't like it anywhere near as much, but I can imagine a future scenario inwhich it may get use again. For now, it sits on my shelf in its box for almost a year now. It has more [rpximty effect than the new Rodes, but it also sounds less real, a bit like a smiley-face EQ.

Poor 4033! That's why I sometimes think about selling it, because it must be lonely.
