In 1991 my wife wanted to get me something nice (drum releated) for our first Christmas married. She called a buddy and fellow drummer and asked him to go to the music store to help her. She decided on getting me a new ride cymbal. They went into the cymbal room and saw that there are a couple dozen different ride cymbals displayed. When she asked my buddy to help her pick one out her told her "buying cymbals is like buying underware. It's very personal" Well, she picked one out herself and that cymbal is still my go to ride, but she never bought me another piece of musical gear again. She always tells me "it too personal"
Note to any young people reading this: find someone to marry before you finish college---by the time you finish high school if you're lucky enough to find someone mature/responsible enough to marry you at that age. You may not get another shot.
Ah 1991, what a year...The last time my wife ever bought gear for me that I didn't specifically ask for...She bought me an Ensoniq SD-1, a Tascam 32-PBH, an Alesis Quadraverb, an Alesis MEQ-230, a pair of Peavey HK-8 nearfields, 32 3' patch cables, and a night on the town...She had a really shitty job that paid really well...
...I only wish she'd have asked me what I wanted, like she does nowadays. She makes much less money now, however, and the gear seems to have stayed expensive...
