So my daughter is building a ukulele

I hope that unlike British cars, British guitars don't need a $500 fan belt pulley replaced after 56,000 miles

Your delusional mate! We haven't made cars here for decades. We've assembled some for the big boys though..

What are you, French? :p Trying to weasel your way out of this one, I don't think so! I don't care if the engine is actually Brazilian! :p

. . . we don't build cars here anymore either, at least not until the 72 months' supply is gone from the dealer's lots :(

Whats more I think you'll find that $495 of that $500 was for American labour.:p

No, that's just the cost of the part. How a cast piece of metal can cost $500 is beyond me. Serves me right for buying a car from Hitler's Motor Werks

So was this car British or German? Or are you demonstrating a typical level of geographic knowledge common to your good people.:p

Let's see, it has the reliability of a British car and the repair costs of a German car. Somehow it lacks the sexiness of a Brazilian though

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news but what you actually have there is a Chrysler.:o

Nope, I don't think I could learn it, I don't have a lot of talent for blown instruments. I just go for 30 or 40 seconds and loop it :D

30 or 40 seconds! I take it you're not a smoker. So, what other interesting instruments do you own/play?

Hmmm, I have a 29-string folk harp that I rarely play. Looks nice mounted on the wall next to the useless bodhran though. I have a lute that needs repair--the previous owner decided to ream out the pegholes to mount electric guitar machines  So I need to replace the peghead wood. I sold the machines which mostly paid for buying the lute though :D

I bought a bowlback mandocello ($50!) in need of restoration (really just a strip & refinish); it sits next to my bowlback mandolin which I pulled the original fingerboard as it was crap. Haven't put the new fingerboard on. I have an Alvarez f-hole steel string with a sunken top. Puzzling what to do about that one; probably beyond my skill especially since there is little access inside due to the f-holes. There is a theme here I'm sure you've noticed; I need to kidnap muttley for a weekend :o

Let's see, I have a bunch of little percussion thingies but everybody does so no big deal there. Between my daughters I have four violins. I'd like a tenor sax for me but don't have the funds. I have a rainstick (you can see that in the vidoe with the didg--"World Instruments" :D). I have a Pearl Rhythm Traveler kit with a piccolo snare I picked up--the original snare became a 13" tom, and I mounted bottom heads on all the toms. Good kit for the kids and the simple surf beats I can play. Right now I don't have a crash cymbal though.

But my pride and joy (when completed) will be my short-scale pipe organ, five ranks as follows:

4' Flute d'Amour
4' Labial Oboe
2 1/3' Vox Humana
2' Principal
1 1/3' Unda Maris

It will be fully MIDI-controlled, with these extremely cool driver boards (yet another fine UK product):

http://j-omega.co.uk/mtp8.html

Such that anyone can play the organ by sending me a MIDI file. I will offer a free service where I post the resulting .mp3 file on my website  That way I don't actually have to play it myself, I can listen to everyone else play it. A MIDI player pipe organ! Recording is so 20th century

I also wrote this control app, so that I can play the organ live from a regular ol' MIDI controller but have fully customizable registrations accessible via a MIDI control change:

You freaks need a DIY instrument forum.

To bloody right. The more people we can get building the instruments they play the better.

MSH, just shout and send me a few pics we can do this. My time and advice is the easy bit.;)

The pipe organ sounds cool. I'd love to see some more of that one.

I'm thinking I might have to sell the Airscreamer to fund my aspirations :o I am really hoping to get the pipe organ moving soon, at least get one windchest built this month. I have one of those driver boards thus far and everything else is in place--heck, I wrote that software two years ago this month :(

The pipes will be spread among three windchests built into my studio's built-in bookshelves (my rack is in the middle!) Not too many pipe organs have their own bar sink! It will definitely look very cool if I ever finish :o

Oh, and you mean the sunken top? I dunno, I have a "sinking" feeling it will end up needing a neck reset and there is no way I'm attempting that. My leading theory was to cram a bassbar underneath the bridge, but I can imagine you'll tell me that's not a very good theory.

It is a nice guitar that sounds great other than its extreme action problem, I got it cheap too :(

British cars and guitars.................I have a love hate relationship going :D.

My Range Rover is an absolute joy to drive, when the Lucas electricals aren't stuffing up:mad:

My '94 Patrick Eggle Berlin Pro is a joy to play but it has a neck which requires frequent truss rod adjustments...........totally unstable:mad:

Wow, that's seriously impressive. The pipe organ sounds cool - very adventurous.

I can sort of sympathise with the guy who put the electric machineheads on the lute - years of dabbling with ukuleles has left me with a deep and abiding hatred of friction tuners.

Yeah, kidnap Muttley and get the Alvarez and the mandocello sorted out.

The lute would have originally just had pegs. The machines would have been a great idea, except there was not room for 15 of them, and they made the instrument waaay top-heavy.

One of the inlays on the uke's neck half-popped when I pulled the masking  I managed to delicately drill the rest out and replace it :o

Other than that, finishing is going well if slowly--daughter doesn't feel like working every day
