just two words:

richie kotzen

doesn't he play those fast arpeggios? doesn't he put his entire soul into his music?

yes, he does! not every one that can play those sweep-arpeggios can't play music.

ok, I'm sure "that guy" wasn't richie kotzen... but when I meet "that guy" I always check out what I could benefit of his playing.

here in switzerland most guitar-players suck anyway... so beeing in a guitar store I never have to be afraid that I'm the one with the worst technique. but once, when I checked out a line 6 ax212 playing some mick mars riffs there was that dude (not that guy) who checked out an acoustic playing some smooth jazzy arpeggios at about 200 miles an hour ;)... wow. that DID impress me much (oh-oh-ooo oh ooo oh...) so you got the speed and have got the touch (wasn't that shania... har-har-har).

so what I want to say: even if "that guy" hasn't got tone, hasn't got soul, hasn't got timing... he's at least able to sweep.
add that sweep-thing to your playing - you won't lose the rest.

next time you see "that guy" and he goes like "you'll get it" you simply plug in, play a little blues, add some sweeps here and there and "that guy" will really realize that he can't play.
:p

right!...sweeps aren't really that hard imho...now some of the arpeggios and classical scale stuff is hard to me since i dont play speed..but like i said before i fully understand and appreciate the disipline it takes to play that way...

you guys are introducing me to some new names (ive never been one who follows particular guitarist..just bands..)..

i am a bassist also, did that in bands for the most part...so people like stanley clark and jaco pastoris(sp?) i have listened too and studied...also jack bruce....john paul jones...bootsie collins....yes even billy shehan....flea (who is an unbelievable musician)...the original matallica bassist (i'm having a brain fart on his name..sorry)....and lots more i have worked on their stuff and incorporated the various styles in my playing...

my strengths on acoustic guitar come from my bass background...i still have a hard time with those high b and e strings lol...but after a break from music of 4 years im starting back with a fresh outlook and focusing on acoustic guitar..so my road is long..challanging..and very exciting.

i found this place through my interest in home recording..but i've decided to play and practice until i feel the urge to write again..then begin recording.

i remember when i was kid that loved to party (if u know what i mean) then one day it came down to using my money to go score or go down to the music store and buy a golden ticket ( oops i mean a pack of guitar strings) then i think i sat down and tried to play the guitar with the dream of being a rock god!!!, i think i was probably pretty self-centered when it came to the music store or even when trying to play with other musician's,,,,,see i had this dream of being another jimi hendrix, another randy rhoads, ahhh the old days,,,,today, i love everything about music, every style, and yes even just walking into the music store and having some annoying scrub trying to jam with me,,,,,but i thank the spirit of life and am happy to see that hopefully, yet another person's love for music, ...will receive it's and enjoy strength...a hundred fold. shred on!!!!

Thanks for the last 8 posts or so for bringing a necessary balance to this whole thread.

yeah..it seems we all are mostly in agreement that the ultimate goal is a blending of styles that you, the player, control at will...

anyone relate to the fact that i am never, ever satisfied with my playing?

no matter how much i progress i always hear more in my head that needs to come out...

sometimes, rarely, i have a very satisfying session of playing but then soon after i'm thinking "hmm..now how can i make that better?" sometimes it's as simple as picking up another guitar...it can give a fresh outlook especially if it's easier to play..that's what scares me about buying that taylor...i probably won't find a better guitar lol...

Sometimes I am, sometimes I'm not.

I remember years ago when I didn't have the chops I do now, I would play for hours and hours. I didn't have the chops I do now, but I could take any emotion and express it on the guitar. Sure, I couldn't bend, sweep, vibrato, etc. like I can now, but my axe was more like an extension of my body...

Heh. Sometimes a different axe helps the creative juices, sometimes a different amp, sometimes different effects, sometimes nothing helps. :)
