so i'm in the music store today...

.......looking at acoustic guitars..and this guy is over in the corner playing all this fast, speed-picking sh1t on a strat...right? I mean he has that sh1t down to a science...(i'm an ear player..been doing it close to 20 years....so i know what kind of disipline it takes to get that stuff down..not my bag but to each his own..):D

so i hunker down on a stool and start playing some stevie ray-type stuff on this sah-weet taylor acoustic ($3000)...i mean it plays so much smoother than mine i'm rippin'......and a small crowd gathers around...we're talking about the guitars and i'm playing some stuff....just hanging...

then...the metal dood in the corner decides he'll plug into an amp that is right by me.....he starts sweep picking over what i'm playing.....and it just sounds BAD! I mean WRONG! lol..it doesnt even fit and plus that his meter is horrible...the people standing there look at him like he's crazy...it was so bad i stopped playing.

i get up and some guy is talking to me about the taylor and shred-head walks over and gives my a sly grin and says "work on it man..you'll get it."......

I was like WTF??? roflmao..:D

i asked him what he meant..and he said "that blues stuff your playing sounds cool and all...but you need to work on some theory...I practice 5 hours a day on my speed picking...I can show 'ya what to practice.."

I told 'em no, but thanks anyway....and asked him if he could play one tune all the way through...anything..and he told me "naw..I don't do rhythm."

LOL.....WTF is the point of playing like that? you can't play in a band...all you can do is hang around music shops impressing the kiddies lol...

BTW...I wish i could afford the taylor..:D
 
Sounds like that duds sufferd from Erctile Disfunction. Perhaps its the name of his band!:eek:
 
the funny thing about THAT GUY is that he's always kinda pitiful in a way...kinda lonely (i guess the chicks don't dig the sweep picker any more since nirvana lol)

i've seen sooo many like that...

i knew a guy once in the '80s who went out to GIT (seemed every guitar player i knew then wanted to go) and came back sucking worse than when he left..

even though he could rip some ying-yangvay when he got back....lol:D
 
I'm a Taylor whore. It's only a matter of time until I buy another. Now I know why they have such a huge line of guitars, because you can't just own one.

I played an 810 (dreadnaught) recently and it was unreal. Perfectly balanced and warmer than my 414. I also played a W15, it's a walnut jumbo and it was really lively.....easily the most beautiful Taylor ever. I would never buy it because it sounds a lot like my 414 and I think a jumbo might be too boomy for close-miking.

I live near the Taylor factory. One of these days I'm going to go over and take the tour. The smell of the wood will be intoxicating.
 
I used to live down the street from the Wrigley (gum) factory. The smell of the neigborhood on JuicyFruit days was enough to make you cry.

Why is "that guy" always in Guitar Center? And why does he always have to play an amp--he clearly has no intention of buying--so loud that it drowns out even the drums from upstairs?
 
It's the idea that if you play loud and you insult everybody, that makes you superior. Started with LBJ along about 1967 or so and got really out of hand in the mid '70s. Now we're seeing the result of reproduction theory at work; a new generation of people angry just because. All you can do is put the guitar back on the rack until the virus is spent.
 
I used to think that I could shred too. Once I started recording myself and hearing how poorly my timing was I stopped. If I spent a lot of time working with a metronome I could probably do it pretty well, but it's really not me. I walk slowly, I eat slowly, I screw women slowly....why shouldn't my guitar playing reflect my personality ?

Whenever I try out guitars there is always some dumbfuck next to me making a cacophonous racket. The stores have lost so many sales because of "that guy". Maybe he works for a competing store and he's there to make sure the competition is losing sales. It's a conspiracy !
 
One good thing about "those guys" is that they almost always sleep late.Get there early and noodle in peace.
 
Another good thing about the shred guy is you don't ever have to worry about him taking one of your gigs. These guys are so busy practicing they don't even have the time nor talent to join a band..

Maturity plays a big factor in being that guy. We all want to be that guy when we start out and don't know any better. And then we grow up and figure out that the heart of the song isn't that kickass sweeping minor9th in the solo.

And besides...NOBODY CAN PLAY FASTER THAN K.G. from Tenacious D.:D
 
being an acoustic player...if i pick up an electric that has super low action i can shred scales like mad..lol....

it's funny..it doesn't have any feeling to it it's just that i'm so used to having to press on the strings of my acoustic that the electric is too easy...

i'm sure anyone that has played guitar for a few years can do it if they want to...

BTW.....have you ever noticed that "THAT GUY" never, ever plays an acoustic lol...
 
Ah...the return of the shredder! The annoying guy we all know and love to hate!

Cyrokk is exactly right...the guitar store is the only place these guys hang out. Although, occasionally you'll run into them at bars when you get off the stage. They'll be in the corner (not on stage for sure) telling everyone how you need to learn theory. You ever run into one that WORKS at the guitar store? That's even more annoying.

I think that's what theory is for...telling everyone how shitty they play.
 
The guy that taught me my first licks is one of those dudes... He only plays metal. Can do the sweeping thing and everything, fast as hell. I remember years ago he was picking on BB King. All that dude played was <insert random bends in here>. Everybody can do that.

And another time we were trying to jam around a bit. Dude just couldn't play a shuffle. Couldn't get the swing rhythm right. Just couldn't do it. Didn't even realize that he just couldn't get the rhytm right. That was a sad moment. :D

And I'm pretty sure I can teach all off these guys some theory. Now I'm a theory-slut, but still, they might know all the chords etc, I wanna see what they know of the functional meaning of them... You won't get any feeling from rushing whatever scales/arpeggios up and down. And that's how far there theory goes...
 
Those guys are always bragging about Swedish guitarists and listen to 20 year old bands with names that have the word "white" in them and are intentionally mis-spelled...like "Whyte Steal", or "White Whyzzard" and have song titles like..."From the Forest of the Mountain Gnomes", or "The Tales of the Bard".
 
How about Grieg's "In the hall of the mountain king". Does that qualify as such? Grieg is Danish, but it's close, and the name is right... :P

the guy i was refering to earlier (who went to GIT) was at a party gig I was playing a few years ago (i played electric bass with a band for a few years) and my guitar player let him jam some with us...

he sat there and played, note-for-note, a bunch of gilmore (pink floyd) and clapton solos..attempting to show us how easy it was to play those guys....

but everything he played was completely void of feeling...it's hard to describe because he played each note correctly but it just didn't move you at all...'ya know?

My guitar player's rig had an awesome tone when he played thru it but the GIT dude somehow made it sound awful...

knowing notes does not make you a musican......IMHO it can't be learned it has to be genetic and you have to nuture it...

I think you CAN learn it... Not by practicing technique. But by practicing listening. Get passed the technique and play on a higher level. Play music instead of notes. And you can even practice it...
 
oh sure you can learn to mimic.....and very convincingly....

i really meant that IMHO you can't really learn to originate....

you can learn how to play what you envision....sure.:)
