So I know Antares gets bashed a lot, but I like the auto-tune plug.
Well, the avox plug sounds cool after reading thier description of it - and I'm down for anything that can give my vocal tracks a little something extra, so I tried it out.
And, wow, it sucks big time. I guess you can do some strange wierd stuff if you want, but nothing that will make your vocals sound, well, better.
Here are the features, and why they suck at what they do:
THROAT: Well, if you want to sound a little more like Kermit the Frog, or maybe add that extra over-the-top nasal quality to your voice, this is the ticket. I tried a lot of different combinations with the parameters that you can tweak, and it went from bad to worse. It has a "breathiness" function, perhaps to make your tracks a bit more sultry or sexy? Whatever it's function, it basically sounds like you ran your vocal through a really, really bad 80's rack guitar setup, with the nice "hair band air distortion" cranked to the max. Terrible.
DUO (doubler): I guess this is ok - you can change the pitch, timing, and vibrato, but really it just sounds like you copy and paste your vocal on to a new track. Changing the pitch, timing or vibrato much at all just makes is sound. . .well - bad, again. You're much better off singing the part twice.
CHOIR: So you can have 4, 8, 16, or 32 "distinct" clones of your voice. Wow, so they just took the DUO effect, and doubled it a few times. It's crap times 4, 8, 16, or 32 - whichever you choose.
PUNCH: Basically just a compressor/limiter. How state-of-the-art.
SYBIL: OK, by this time I'd had enough, and stopped using it (I was getting tired of hearing myself sing the same line over and over), so I have no idea if this function is useful or not.
Reading over this post I realize it sounds really cynical, especially from somebody who uses the antares auto-tune plug, but hey - I was hoping for something that could spice up my vocals a bit, and was completely dissapointed. Whoever would pay the 3 or 400 that they charge for this in order to make a normal vocal sound better is definately pissing money away. I suppose it could be cool for some really trippy/wierd effects, but I would think there are other far more quality plugs that could do that sort of thing.
My 2 cents.
