there are several probs with the Mr8 ?
My little brother bought one whilst visiting the states so I had a chance to play with it. I liked it but only recorded one short track. Sounds like a whole lot of probs for a 'notebook'. If Fostex are marketing this as a recorder I would suggest bombarding them with demands for free upgrades as there seems to be so many complaints about the most basic functions.

nickybomb, I am one happy MR-8 user. I've had it for 6 months now and I have never had any problems with it. I bought it because it had a lot of features and no moving parts.

It is a bit limited, I know, but I already knew that before I bought it. I use it primarily as a notepad, or for overdubbing instruments in strange places where it is difficult to bring more sophisticated equipment. The monitor section is noisy, admitted, but the recordings are dead silent. I've since complemented it with a dual channel 48 V phantom power box, enabling me to use my selection of good studio condenser mics wherever I go.

The firmware upgrades for this unit are already free...

Same results here. Works well and well worth the $. Sounds like you have a bad unit. Every brand has their percentage of lemon units...

mr8

remember, this is a place where people come to get problems solved, while there are a few here who have problems many dont, including myself.....large number of owners never have a problem just like any machine made by any company.....

oops

I wasn't dissing the unit at all ! I am scared of equipment I can't take apart tho. I was wondering if the memory card slot could be used as a breakout to a large external hard drive (like with a laptop computer) that would rock. I have been a fan of fostex since the humble but historical X-15 4 track tape and have upgraded via 8 track tape, G-16 tape...then I got an FD4 the day it came out which was cool...upgraded to FD8..then to D160s. I am looking forward to getting a D2424. Dang they should give me one for being a lifetime supporter ! :)

I made recordings over a period of ten years on a Fostex 250 4-track cassette mixer acquired in 1982 - later I upgraded it to a Fostex 480, which has lasted me another eight years before I went digital with n-Track Studio (covered by a forum elsewhere in here) Now I use the Fostex MR-8 as a supplement recorder for field work - there's lifetime support for ya... :D

regards, Nils
