I need to mic a piccolo snare and the SM 57 doesn't seem to do a good enough job capturing it. I tried a AGK C535 small condenser but it picks up too much of the HiHat. Any suggestions?

I am using a C1000 to mic the HiHat and it sounds ok but I would like it to sound better. Anyone have any suggestions for hihat mics or techniques?

I am using ADK A51s for overheads and they sound really good but the snare seems to be mostly on the one side instead of in the middle. Should I move the overheads closer together or would that affect the stereo image? The drummer is due back in the studio next week so I don't have drums to experiment with till then.

Should I compress any of the drums while recording or should I just worry about compression afterwards?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I mic a piccolo with a 57 and get a nice sound. I find that having the 57 parallel to the skin of the snare with about 1.5 ~ 2 inches of it hanging over the snare sounds nice with piccolos.

i attached an illustration. i need to take more pics while im recording.

Overheads are experimenting with a kit. A lot fo kits in a lot of different rooms affect overheads A LOT. More then i originally imagined. Try ORTF if you are looking for seperation, place them high above the kit and as if they are symetrical to the snare & kick, i think that gives good balance to seperation.

Oktava MC012's also have a nice sound...I would use them mostly for overheads, but they'd probably do in a pinch for a hi-hat as well.

I'm curious, what kind of music are you recording?

I am trying to record my friends heavy rock band, CYPHER. Their sound is sort of in the vein of Godsmack. If you want to download their first CD, goto www.cypher9.com. I would recommend the following tracks,

The guitarist uses a 5 string cello and it really sounds wild.

And I Bleed
Mercy
SunShine Blind

I'll try the 57 again, thanks everyone, for the help.

Try micing the top of the snare with the 57 just as kristian described and mic the bottom of the snare with the C535, a good starting placement is directly under the 57, pointing straight up or angled slightly towards the centre of the bottom head, adjust distance from the head and distance from the rim until you get a good sound. Remember that you will probably need to invert the phase of the bottom mic.
