I have been posting a lot lately regarding mics.. I am now wondering what I should get for snare. I probably will use it for guitar, too. It will be max about $100. I was looking at the Shure SM-57 and the Sennheiser e609 silver. I was wondering waht would be better for snare and guitar?

There have been a couple threads about this lately.

As afar as 57 vs 609 silver on guitar: 609 all the way. Smoother, but still has that presence peak, and a fuller low end. The 57 is OK on snare, but it's not quite snappy enough for me. I don't know about the 609 on snare.

My Favorite snare mic is the Beyer M201.

The 609 in my opinion does sound better on most guitars. I have not actually used it on snare, but my guess is that it would be a little too tilted in the lower frequencies for most snares. SM57's are certainly not the best mic's out there for any one job, but in my opinion there isn't a better mic out there for ANY price for pure flexibility and usability all the way around the board.

I couldn't disagree with you more. I haven't gotten an SM57 to sound good on anything other than snare or guitar amp.

How is the Beyer on other things?

This may surprise you, but the M201 is even great on kick (very tight sound), it can be used on hats or ride cymbals, as overhead mic and it's a great mic for horns.

It will make you happy on many amped guitars and even acoustic guitars.

And here's surprise number two, you can use it for vocals, you'll need a decent popscreen and a high pass filter, but it will sound great on quite some vocals.

But for vocals you might prefer the Beyer M88, which is a great kick and snare mic too.

Beyer baby!

It's all about technique, and for certain things a decent EQ. The nice thing is that 57's accept EQ's really well. I agree though that they are more useful for guitars and snare drums though. I actually like them on hi hats when doing punkish stuff. They are also fairly easy to use on horns, and on certain percussion instruments. Was it Tom Petty's Wildflower album that was done all with 57's?

Sennheiser MD441

Snare Mic?
I have heard and read a lot about the Sennheiser MD441 used as Snare Mic. They say it is also good for percs.
It is not cheap. (700USD) so I am still hesitating to get it myself.
If anyone has had previous experience with this babe, lemme know.

One more thing, I am also looking at Shure Beta 98 DS for my toms. Anyone know about these. I cannot find any decent reviews about these mics anywhere (and G knows I have been looking everywhere)

Looking forward to comments

I don't have the 441 but I do have a 421. I really like the sound I get from the 421. Nice and crisp. Smokes the 57 and the sennheiser(and I do have both of those) I just got a sm7and I'm looking foward to trying that on snare.

I've tried the Senn 609 on snare, and it's OK. Great on guitar - that's really what it's meant for. I've even used it on a bass cab and it sounded fantastic. I placed it really close and got a kinda natural compression. Smooth.

DJ or Han (or anybody else, for that matter), can you direct me to an online dealer of Beyer mics, preferably in the US or that will ship to the US. Thanks!

Any body ever tried Beyers Opus 53 or 83 on Drums (toms)?

And to reply to ADAM P, Try Sweetwater and select Beyerdynamic from the manufacturers list.

Thanks! They didn't have the M201 I was looking for, but I found that Full Compass carries it.

i did a whole record with the m201 for vocals. i used that big old "wind screen" that comes with the mic. i was using it for a REALLY sloppy female vocalist who sort of shout/sings/raps. the wind screen gave you enough distance so you didnt have to worry so much about the proximity effect. and it pulled all the pops out.

sounded great that there mic in that role. i have always been sad that i gave it back to the person i borrowed it from.

oh, and i love it on bass cabs as well...

Well, I just won a Beyer M201 on eBay. I swore I wasn't gonna buy any more mics for awhile (I've bought 4 in the last month!), but after reading 3 different threads on snare mics, I figured I just HAD to snag this one. Can't wait to try it out!
