Snare drum sound

I am in a band and I have a Yamaha MD8 mini disc recorder.
I am pretty pleased with recordings I am doing and have done in the past, but I can never seem to get the sound I want from the snare.
I am not a drummer so I can`t say how my drummer tunes his snare, etc.
but that being said I was wondering how studios get that big booming snare from the 80`s like on Def Leppard`s Pyromania or in Skid Row`s 18 and Life.

Try micing both the skin on top, and the snare itself underneath

I usually prefer a 57 on top, and a tom mic clipped on underneath (e.g. Beta 98). This gets the 2 different sounds.

And yes, gated verb is a good idea

I did notice that when I used a 57 on top it got some punch, so I am going to try to mic the bottom also to capture the snare.
