I think WinXP (and Win2000) is great! My machine has never been better. I ran a dualboot with Win98SE and Win2000, and I figured that Win2000 was much more stable and easy to use than Win98. But that's just me... :D

A week ago I installed WinXP and I've never been more satisfied with a Win OS. :)

Yer out of my expertise (and I use that term loosley) when it comes to XP. I have two full versions (paid for) just sitting here, but havent got up the balls to install them. I do have XP running on my business computer, and it seems to be kicking along OK, but I'm not taxing that system either, so I really don't have anything to go on other than what I've heard from my friends who are using it. Is there any truth to what they say regarding XP in the way of, if you change hardware, or change stuff with your configuration, you actually have to contact MicroSoft either via internet or by phone, so they can give you some input code to get the computer back into schmeck? That "rumor" is really the only thing keeping me from loading XP into my other machines. Well, that, and the fact that I'm a firm believer of the addage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".. and 98SE seems to be kicking right along at this point. If you have knowlege of what I'm evidintly confused about, could ya shoot some answers my way?

Thanx, Tom.

VICTORY!!!!!

It wouldn't let me install Windows 98 SE ofter the top of the current version I had (without some HUGE update I had to download) so I thought I'd do a clean hard drive install and
what do you know!! not a pop or a click to be heard now! it was the actual OS causing the problem!

It was a very time consuming and drastic measure I know, but it's FINALLY fixed the problem after all that tweaking and mucking about! :D

The only problem is the sessions I did before still contain the dreaded pop syndrome 'recorded' onto the tracks so I'm going to have to re-record all of them, all over again! oh well, such is life

I would like to say thanks to James, Maestro & toki987
and a very BIG thankyou to Tom & Moskus! if you guys were in Australia I would buy you a beer or two!

Cheers ;)

Good Stuff Bro! I went throught pretty much the same thing and I KNOW how frustrating it can get. Way glad to hear yer set now. Let me know about your first post in the MP3 clinic.

AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE... OI OI OI!

Peace, Tom.

Help, Guys! I am having the same problem as Retro-man, but I already HAVE Windows 98 SE running. (I had to upgrade in oreder to get the Delta 44 card's mixer to function properly.) I am Running Pro Audio 9 on a Pentium 2 , 352 MB, through a Delta 44 audio card. I have a ton of noises in my tracks during playback, which only seems to get worse as I add more tracks. My DMA is enabled on both of my drives (a 10 GB system drive - on which I have tha actual cakewalk program, and an 80 GB for storing audio files). I had to move Cakewalk to the system drive in order to get the transport functions to even work. I have followed the usual steps to optimize a PC for audio, as well. Any suggestions?

Have you tried to raise the latency? [Options -> Audio]
Have you run the Waveprofiler? [same place]

Have you increased the buffer setting (latnecy setting?) in the Delta Control Panel, and then run the Waveprofiler?

Haven't ried making those adjustments in the Delta's controls, but will do. Thanks!

well, I did increase the latency buffer in Delta 44, then ran Wave Profiler, but it didn't help. The pops and distortion are still there. When I raised the latency to the top setting, I had dropouts as well. I'm wondering what to try next...I've had so much trouble with PA9, it's unbelievable. For the longest time, the transport functions would freeze up, then I had to update to Windows 98 SE, then upgrade my memory, now this noise problem is back with a vengeance! I'm about ready to give up trying to make cakewalk work on this machine!!! I've had it for 3 years, and have only recorded one thing with it (a short jingle, at that) because it just won't run without a million glitches for me. Everytime I think I solve a problem, something new comes up. Could it be possible that this gateway will never be made to run this program well? I've heard of incompatible chipsets and such...or is there just a ghost in my machine? HELP!

When I raised the latency to the top setting, I had dropouts as well.
If you had dopouts too, you turned it to the left. Turn it all the way to the right.

Hey, Moskus - Thanks for the suggestions. I RAISED the latency (by that you mean increasing the time, correct?), in both Cakewalk itself, as well as in the Delta. I experimented w/ different setting combinations, but still can't get all of the little "burps" to go away. I ran a defrag on both of my drives, and now the real bad distortion is gone from the synth tracks, but the acoustic/electric guitar track is still having trouble. This morning I retried and had a dropout and got a message saying that I was out of disk space! (I have about 3 Gig available on the system drive where the program resides.) I honestly don't have a clue what's going on. I also re-enabled virtual memory, against conventional wisdom - not sure what effect, if any, it had. It seems that everytime I get one problem fixed, another arises. I think I have some serious hardware/ software issues going on. I probably need an expert to come over and do some serious on-site trouble shooting! Do such people even exist? Man, this damned thing is taking all of the fun out of playing music! No wonder I enjoy playing the drums (acoustic, that is) for relaxation lately!

Well... have you checked your PC for viruses? Many viruses copy themselves and other files across your harddrive and it's really eats disk space.

Which reminds me, do you have an AntiVirus-program running while using PA9? This could be the problem. Run as few programs as possible while using PA9 (a place to start looking is on the Task Bar, next to the clock).

Are you drivers to soundcard, networkcard (if any), videocard, and so on, updated? Are you having an IRQ-conflict. Check it in the Device Manager, rightclick on My Computer -> Preferences -> Device Manager.

Moskus, Thanks for your input. I ran a virus scan and found nothing. I don't normally have it running, by the way. As far as IRQ conflicts, is there anything in particular I need to be certain isn't sharing (I would assume the soundcard needs to NOT share w/ anything else - or am I wrong?) a location?

It sounds like my problem I had not long ago. Windows Update installed some corrupt drivers for my NIC, and I had crackling all over the place! Irritating ass hell! Got rid of the drivers, and everything went back to normal...

What PCI-cards do you have in the machine?

...yup... used "Windows Update" once.. ONCE:mad: !

never again! I you need new or updated drivers for hardware, get it from the manufacturer's site. Don't think that a Windows Update will solve all your software glitches.... ...the update wacked my computer out bigtime too!

It's strange really, because the NIC-driver was from the developer, SMC. I tried the SMC-driver just for "fun" and the same thing happened...
