Snake Cable + D-sub?

I'm making an 8-pair snake cable to connect stuff from my patch bay to my mixer. My rack case is about 20" deep, and my patch bay is only 4" deep, so I'd rather not have to reach way in there to plug in 8 cables each time. I'm thinking about using a short 3' cable coming out of the patch bay to a D sub connector, then another D sub connector would be attached to a 35-40 foot snake cable going to the mixer. Are there any drawbacks to using D-subs? Thanks.

I've just done the same configuration a few months ago. It works great, no loss.
Be sure to get quality d-sub (it my cost you about $150 a piece, but it's worth it)

good luck
(oh, and make yourself a diagram of the inner connectors for future use, when making more of them d-sub cables -> you want the option to exchange them right! so keep them the same)

Dsub is great but it's sometimes hard to find stuff that uses it. I use the ProCo Dsub cables for around $90 and they seem to work fine. Instead of using a short Dsub at the PB you might think about using a long Dsub run and then use the short Dsub breakout close to your rack. That will keep the cable run simple and probably cost less.

Right now I'm having a hard time finding a Dsub patchbay. There is one for $300 but I'd like to find something a little cheaper. Furman made one but they discontinued it, bastards.

I almost crapped my pants when I read $150 for a D-Sub. I'm assumming you meant $150 for the entire cable. I sure hope that a single d-sub connector doesn't cost $150!

Thanks for the replies!

You may be relieved to know that the budget D-subs at $40 bucks a ten foot run sound identical to tha other more expensive kind. There is no need to get the 'best' in this case IMO, the molded TASCAM ones work fine.

uh, no. I was talking about the Cable-end connector PLUS the chassis-conector PLUS the 50 silver-pens that go in it....
together it's about 150 bucks (I'm talking about the Hartman (25 connections 8x3 + earthing) stuff here, not the cheapest, not the most expensive ones)

Okay, this is not your average d-sub (used as parallel connector on computers) connectors. It's a rugged audio plug!!!

Another advise: don't go cheap on your mulit cable... some good (not so expensive) ones are Fastline, Klotz etc. check the capacitator value of the cable.. heigh=bad!
