boom box recordings
Hi,

I am a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan. I am not real close to the synth world. But I was wonder if any of you keyboard junkies knew what type of syth keyboard was used on the Smashing Pumpkins album "Machina" and or "Machina II"?

I really like that sound too.

Alot of it is a big guitar distortion tone with an underlying string synth. You'd be suprised what a good tone you can get from any cheap garage sale keyboard as long as you let the keyboard stay in the back of the mix. Make sure the keyboard has at least 41 keys.

some of it sounded like it might have been run thru a micro-synth....but I haven't listened to that stuff in five years probably.

I'm sure they didn't use an 80's casio, but a do get your point. Thanks for the advice. I am a guitar player. I do like to add reinforcing synth cords to my my recordings. Currently I own a 25 key midi controller and an old Roland D-550 synth rack module. There are a few usable sounds on the unit, but Im searching and testing out newer models to find more usable sounds.

As far as what kind of synth was used I haven't been able to find out either. If you dig hard and long enough you may be able to find out somewhere.

I too am an enormous fan of the Pumpkins. I know they got a fair amount of guff from the critics for the way they recorded Machina I and II. But whenever Billy gets asked about it he always stands by the way that record sounds. It's grittier and the guitars and synths are muddy as hell. Though many didn't like Machina I or II I thought they kicked ass. Then again I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to those guys.
