Small Stone Phase Shifter problemo

I smell home cookin!
I just got a Small Stone phase shifter effects pedal from Electro Harmonix. It doesn't work, even though I've put in a fresh battery and the light comes on when the footswitch is depressed. No sound at all. When the footswitch is off the regular bypass sound goes through it just fine.

I wonder if there is something that I have to do to switch it from AC power to battery power? I have no AC power adapter.

Try going into the out jack and out of the in jack. I've had two EH pedals that work like this, no joke. A Big Muff and a Memory Man.
 
Thanks for the tip, man! I gave it a try, but no cigar.

The instructions say:

"When switching from AC to battery power, pull out the AC power wire, pull out the instument cord, then re-insert the instrument cord. The unit is now functioning on battery."

Unfortunately, I have no AC power adapter to try this.

My Small Stone only works when the back is taken off. It's obviously some kind of shorting problem in my case, and the unit is one of the old, old ones from something like 25 years ago.

I'm not sure if this will help, but check it out.

Just buy an adapter! :rolleyes:
You can get universal adapters that handle multiple voltages and inputs at radio shack or most electronics store.You can always use it for something else if the need arises.

Yeah, but then I have to run a power cable source out to the front of the stage. More crap to trip over.

Plus there is no quarantee that that is the problem.

What would Favre do?
 
the obvious answer is that your input and output cables are reversed. since in your case this doesn't seem to be the correct answer, I believe you got a dud. send it back.

Before I send it back, does anyone know if there are supposed to be two wires attached to the IN jack? I see only 1, and I suspect that this is the problem.

A guy, who was really good with electronic stuff, told me once that these boxes have NOTHING inside them, and that he could build them easily. The cost for making them is probably 5$ each.
 
I'm looking at mine right now:

There's 3 jacks - Amp, Inst. and one for the power adapter.

The Amp (output) jack only has one wire hooked up to it.

The Inst. (input) jack has 4 wires, one of them comes from the battery.

Then if it's not cable orientation, power is reaching the circuit (LED on), and bypass is working (indicating a short is NOT occuring), it can only be a electrical (component) or mechanical (switch) failure. i.e., send it back.

Your friend was correct, a lot of EH peds are very simple in design, but some of them do sound nice; I'm fond of their chorus sound.

Their '70s workbench build quality is charming, albeit not the most reliable.

I wouldn't mess with any wires yo. you'll voidee your warantee. EH pedals sound so very nice.
