Small Run of Vinyl

Is there anyway to take a cd I have put sweat blood and tears into and have just a very short run of vinyls pressed? Everywhere I see you have to have a minimum of 100 or so.

thing about vinyl is they have to cut a laquer and plate a stamper ..... that costs a certain amount. They'd probably press fewer than 100 if you wanted but it wouldn't cost any less because they have to recover the costs of making up a stamper.

Rock and Roll baby! We coined the genre SCROG rock (Sci-Fi progressive rock). SCROG is all about the feeling of the music not content.

I know its quite the undertaking and the processes involved are not condusive for minimal copies, but theres nothing in this world i want more than to be on vinyl. My buddy and I have made 6 albums since Oct '07 and one of them deserves to be on vinyl. BUT the last thing i need or want are 100-1000 copies of vinyls sitting at my home.

Funny, I was just looking into this very thing on Monday. I called http://www.masterdisk.com/ and asked a few questions. Turns out that Lt. Bob is 150% right. I asked about 1 song and was told a 12" (I think) would be about $800.00 or so and I could have 10 pressed if I wanted but the price would be about the same. He did give me a few a few different places that might be able to do a smaller run but he said the quality might suffer some. I will look at my notes and post his recommendations.

I really into it in a geeky way so I have a DVD on how they make records and the process is freakin' unbelievably complicated.
After seeing that, it's hard for me to see how the damned things work at all!

Vinyl cutter, plus pressing price point.

First, the price point: 500 7" records for $1500.

Vinyl cutting. For very small quantities, you can get a "dub cut," or dub plate made for about $40 each.

Do the math! Once you get up around 30 or 40 disks, it makes sense to have a plate made and do a pressing.

I've never used them because it has to come from a digital source. I called them once to confirm this fact. But, you can send them high quality digital files (24-bit, 96 khz) via the internet, DVD, or CD. So, technically you could achieve better results on the pressing than you could on a CD. Maybe someday I'll try their service, but the service isn't that expensive considering the novelty of hearing yourself on a one run (or very small run) vinyl pressing.

As for the splitting of a comp. i'd be down. I never said I had to have 8 songs on a vinyl. One would be plenty!

It's a bit more acoustic than I was expecting. I belong to a school of thought that says Progressive Rock should be full of dense keyboards (this may be because I can only really do keys myself, of course).
I did like the cover of Fat Old Sun, I think you pretty much nailed that.

I'm interested in the idea as well. Slight problem that the albums were mastered for CD/digital format so they would probably require some re-eq'ing to fit vinyl properly, but I suspect most of us are in that boat anyway.
The other thing is that most of the songs I'd like to get down in vinyl are around the 10min mark

I think you should just get the bulk pressed and try to sell em. Sell em around here or to family friends fans. I know I'd buy one!

I think this would have solved some $$$ problems. I'd be willing to make a go of it depending on price and things. 1 thing is the price for shipping to several people might be a little pricy. We would need someone who has dealt with stuff like this before to step up and kind of take control. The big thing is, from what I understand their are different mixes for analog and digital. I would rather send my 1/4" tape in rather then dump to CD and then send it in, but I'm willing to do what's best for all. Are their any takers?

Yeah but like you're implying yourself, a vinly pressed from a digital source can only be a statement of style or somesuch, and capitulation from an audio-engineering standpoint, at least in terms of the general concept - I mean, it may sound just fine for all I know, but if you've already got your source in 24/96, you'd be much better off having a SACD or DVD audio made, wouldn't you.
