Small Run of Vinyl

If we did a group thing, I think 24/96 would be the more practical option, personally. I'm not sure I have the means to reliably create an analogue copy of the masters, and to be honest, the ones I've had digitally mastered do sound better than the original mix tapes (which I wouldn't let out of the house unless I had to anyway).

Aside from that, to make the album from a pure analogue source they've have to splice 4-5 bits of tape together, all of which were recorded at different calibration levels, standards, probably alignments too and maybe even different speeds. Sound like fun?

Do a search for a guy that goes by hungovermorning on here. His name is scott and He may be able to help you out. He is doing some vinyl stuff. He may be doing it himself so give him a shout.

Hey, that's me! :)

Being a man who's true to my word I will buy three of them.

Which three do you recommend?

Three? My goodness! Pick out whatever three look good and I'll throw in two more for free, just put a note on there. The homerecording bond is a strong one.

OK - but which 3 would you pick? Just give me a starting point here!

I would go with the Pat Boone's Farm / Blackbelts split 7, Wild Cat Daddies "Wham Bam", and Monte Carlos first 7 inch "Guilty of moaning my love," I think all of them are pretty rad though... Thanks again for supporting our little endeavor, we operate non-profit so all monies go to the bands.

Ballpark figures, using groovehouse (no connection to them) as a reference, looks like about $2,000.00 give or take for a lp with cover. So let's say you can put 8 songs on there, that's $250 a piece for about 62 copies each. Not including shipping or anything like that, you're looking at baout $5-6 a piece in costs. Maybe you can squeeze 10 songs, but we've got the burden of having 8-10 people agree on the cover, song order, etc., not to mention somebody has to master the damn thing on tape. That isn't me. That said, it would be a cool project. Maybe the other 7 pay for the 1 who masters, so the per person cost is about $300 for 62 copies, or about us$5 per unit.

Could also get the blank covers and silkscreen it or stamp it or something....

I don't have experience with any of them but as a lark looked around for a few different places. Came up with a ballpark figure to run some basic numbers. One big thing is the lacquers and how many prefer a digital master rather than tape. That is worth another thread though.

Groovehouse has the DIY covers... but I've collected a lot of links to various places that do some or all of the processing from cutting to printing jackets.

That's good. It would be nice to have all that info compiled somewhere. I'm mostly going by this page:

http://www.aardvarkmastering.com/pressing.htm

Groovehouse isn't on there. Anyway, it would be nice if they (Groovehouse) had a breakdown on what exactly you're paying for. They seem to have a pretty cheap price for small runs, but their prices get more and more expensive the more you get. Also, it doesn't look like they do analog mastering. So, maybe if you were just handing them your lacquers...

Just finally got the chance to listen this stuff and it's pretty boss! I recommend anyone that is interested in vinyl to pick up one or two of these and give them a spin.

i am currently getting a record pressed at united record pressing in nashville. its a run of 100 7" singles. total cost with labels (no custom jackets) was $530. got the jackets done by indie imprint for $135

i am happy with my experience with them. they did a good job mastering and plating. test pressings turned out well. i was a bit worried because they guy i went to for recording used ampex 407 tape for mastering. i later found out that that brand of tape suffers from sticky shed syndrome, but all was fine.

should be getting my complete order in the next week or so. i recommend them.

Glad to hear a good experience, but man, at 665.00 for the whole thing, you're going to have to sell those 7" records pretty high to make any profit at all...

i just did it for the love of it. i have always wanted my own vinyl. now i have it :)

hope to make more in the future..
