Do people generally use the smaller diaphram pencils mics for stereo miking guitars?

I know the samson mics are'nt ideal but I do hear good reports of the Samson C02 pair.

Do audo technica do small diapharm pencil pairs too?

Yes, these days the typical mic set up for acoustic guitar is a pair of SD mics. Not the only thing you can do, of course, but it's probably the predominant approach. I've never used the Samsons, so I can't speak to them, but AT has some very nice SD mics. Both the 4041 and the 4051a are very good cardioid SD mics. The 4053a (hyper cardioid) and the 4049a (omni) are excellent as well. Very flat, non peaky mics. The 4051a, 53a and 49a are actually the same body with different caps. AT doesn't actually sell matched pairs to my knowledge, they are typically so close that it doesn't really matter for the most part. Neumann doesn't sell matched pairs of its 184s either. Buy used if you can. The 4051a, 53a and 49a can be picked up for @$250 each with some judicious shopping.

I would be amazed if the Samson mics weren't crap. They rank right up there with Nady in my mind....

If I were trying to mic acoustic guitar on a budget, I'd say you can't go wrong with any of the MSH series.
