Oh God. You're going to tell him to buy the KSM44 again. Aren't you

Humm, are you having a bad hair day... or just too much coffee?

Three points

1: I never have a bad hair day. My hair is pretty damned perfect (and I have a full head of it, thank you very much :p )

2: I'm English. I only drink two cups of coffee a day.

3: Your pathological hatred of Alan Hyatt and his company is getting beyond a joke. Why can't you just let it go and move on? :(

You're pathological hatred of me for not thinking the B1 is a do it all type mic is getting to be sick... hell, your even tagging Harvey's threads with the crap now and we just got him back.

I don't hate you. I just feel sorry for you. And if you look at my posts I've never recommended any SP mic except in a vague "if that's all you've got to spend maybe you could look at this" kind of way.

Besides. I think he should get a Beyerdynamic M201.

Mark 7, here is Harvey's thread that you tagged with crap... http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?threadid=106365 proving you have a hair up your ass for me... hopefully you won't run him off.

I know the Shure KSM44 is more than he wants to spend... but I recommended it anyways because it's a good mic and might serve his needs a little better than the other mic listed above making it worth the extra money... but, only he will know if and when he ever checks one out.

Don't worry about it Mark, some people just don't have a sense of humour, especially when they are the justifiable target of the jibe. :D

So, bearing that in mind, which of these mics
would you recommend?

AKG C1000S

AKG C2000B

Behringer B2

Superlux CMH8A

Behringer B1

Behringer B5

Audio-Technica AT3035

Audio-Technica ATM-33a

Audio-Technica MB4000C

Groove Tubes GT33

Groove Tubes MD1B FET

Oktava MK-012

Oktava MK-012 with 3 Capsules

Oktava MK-319

Rode NT1A

Rode NT3

Samson CO1

Samson CO3

Studio Projects B1

Studio Projects B3

Note: all can be found for £130 or less.

That's a pretty good price on the Groove Tubes. Knowing that, I'd probably give the GT33 a whirl. I've been hearing a lot of good things about them from trusted sources -- they're medium diaphragm, which tend to be pretty versatile.

What the hell Chess - this post isnt about microphones - why are you bringing them into the spotlight. :D:D

Don't you EVER talk to me like that AGAIN.

Do you understand
Well, what other reason did you post that crap on Harvey's thread for, if not because you were trying to poke me? Now stomp your feet yell again. LOL

Why do you think the Beyerdynamic M201 would best suit all his needs? The M201 is my favoite snare mic by-the-way.

PS... goldtop, hang in here. Unfortunately, some on this mic forum rather bicker with me than stay focused on helping you, sorry about that. :( What make's it hard to help you is... you want the mic to do too much and your not willing to pay enough for it.

I don't think he's " not willing" , more like "not able" to pay enough for it.
Goldtop - there's far too much stock put in gear IMO . Yes, you do need something half way decent but the rest is up to your abilities as a performer/engineer.
Try the ADKs - they'll do everything you want for now ( except for vocals). Then, when you've exhausted their possibilities, save up & get something better.

DJL, I'm interested in what you didn't care for re: the AKG C2000B. I've used this mic with very good success for lead and backing vox, guitars, both electric and acoustic, toms, djembe, zarb, and as an overhead pair. I have found it very much like a larger diaphragm version of the MC012, more colored and darker than B-1, and also generally more usable. And I'm not busting your balls, just interested in your impressions of the mic. I also believe that at UK prices, he would have a very hard time finding one mic under $200 that will do a better job on all the stuff he wants it to do than C2000B. I used it for a scratch track that wound up being a keeper because it just was right. I use a pair with my traveling setup, because it's the only mic I have that's suitable for a spaced stereo pair that I would actually sing into.-Richie

If he goes to www.sospubs.co.uk and looks under the classified section he can get a Sennheiser MD421 for £100 - thats a pretty versatile mic.

Or did he specificely want a condensor? I cant remember, too much bickering (although justified in some respects after what ahs happened in the past - Alan was a very helpful guy I'm afraid).

As an aside, I can sympathise with the guy, british prices on mics can be ludicrous at times and we have to sometimes make do with substandard equipment or higher costs, which sucks.

And as a final comment, I once heard a wise man say.......

"Any microphone will record any source in some fashion"

Remember that. I used dynamics for OH's for a long long time until I could afford SD condensors. And to be honest, I wasn't displeased with the results I achieved.

It was a pretty long time ago, and if I remember correctly, we tried the mic on vox on several different sessions and it just didn't cut it for us and seemed to lack or push something, I can't remember... but, I do remember that I didn't care for the mic. But I've always respected your opinion and so maybe he should check the AKG C2000B out and see if it cuts it for him.

Why, because you don't want to answer the question?
