I've been looking around for something thats not so easy to find. A good micro bass extension cab. All it needs to do is be appropriate for practice, be 8 ohms, and handle about 50-60 watts in a 1X10 or 1X12 configuration. In other words, a practice amp without the amp. I intend to drive it with a Carver PM125 power amp bridged to 8 ohms mono with the signal coming from an Avalon AD2022, a Joemeek twinQcs, or a Behringer Bass VAMP Pro, depending on the sound I want. It's strictly a studio rig. I wouldn't dream of expecting the little sucker to function in a live environment.
Most of the decent small cabs I've seen are Backline 2X10's or 1X15's, and are a little pricey, even used. I've been thinking about just buying a bass reflex enclosure and the speaker separately. I'm very new to bass, so I don't know whats out there in speakers. Can anybody give me the lowdown? In other words, can you name some speakers in the following categories:

1. Worthless piece of junk even before it blows.

2. Bargain basement sleeper. Not great, but good for the price.

3. Good basic speaker that everybody uses that can't afford the high end. The Mackie mixer and SM57 of bass speakers.

4. The buck stops here, bass speaker from hell. If you have to ask how much it is, you can't afford it.

Thanks in advance to anyone who has good input. I see everybody handles Eminence. Do they suck, or what?-Richie

You could try an Ampeg 2x10 or 1x15 cab. I think either can be had for somewhere in the neighborhood of $350 (I think thats about what I paid for my 1x15). For some reason I want to think that Eminence makes the speakers for Ampeg's cabinets now, but I could be wrong, so don't hold me to it. I was looking at some Eminence 15"s to re-speaker an old Plush 2x15 I have.

Our bass player found a Fender 2x12 bass cabinet at a pawn shop for about $150. Sounds great.

EBay and pawn shops can be a good source for used gear.

Bag End makes the best bass and guitar cabinets in the world, in my opinion. You would be quite satisfied with their stuff. Look into them.

Thanks for the tips. I think I want to buy or build the cab separately, so I'm mostly interested in replacement speakers. I *don't* want a 2 speaker cab, and I don't want to pay too much for wattage handling capability, although I understand it's good to be able to handle lots more than you have. I can use a 4 ohm or 8 ohm speaker, and either way, it'll never have to handle more than about 55 watts. I already have researched extension cabs, and what I want is not generally made. So talk to me about *speakers*.-Richie

I recently bought a Bass 10 from Rich Raezer (http://www.raezers-edge.com/) and I've been pretty happy with it so far. I drive it with an AI Clarus, and use for small gigs - (double-bass, Fishman Full-Circle pickup). I like its sound, and find it works well off the floor (using a stand or placing it on a chair).

Hope this helps -

- Wil

Thanks for the link, Wil. Raezor appears to be among the high-priced spread. What I'm looking for, though, is still *the speaker*, not a $400+ 1X10 cab.-Richie
